The King Series by Tawdra Kandle

Fearless (King Series # 1)

Tasmyn Vaughn didn't expect much when her dad’s job moved them to a small town in Florida; it was just another new school. But there is more to King than meets the eye, & soon Tasmyn’s ability to hear other’s thoughts is the least of her worries. Entangled in a web of first love, quirky and secretive townsfolk, magic & blood rituals, she discovers the town’s secrets aren’t just bizarre, they’re deadly.

Breatheless (King Series # 2)
Tasmyn Vaughn is not having the senior year she expected. Her boyfriend Michael leaves for college, she's being stalked by a suspicious preacher, pursued by the hot new boy at school and blackmailed by her chemistry teacher--who just might be a witch. Tas needs all of her many talents--and a little help from unexpected sources--just to keep her head above water... literally.

An Interview with the Author

DDS: Tell us a little bit about yourself
I am homeschooling mom of four living in central Florida.   My oldest daughter is married and my second oldest is in college, so I have just the two youngest being schooled at this point.  My husband is a hospice chaplain, and I spend most of my time writing, teaching and reading!  Oh, and yes, I have purple hair.

DDS: What got you into writing?
I began writing early in my life; I loved inventing characters and stories. I transitioned into non-fiction during my college and early married years.  I have written columns and articles on parenting and homeschooling, as well as some homeschooling curriculum.  About five years ago, I had the time and inspiration to try my hand at writing a novel.  The King Series was born out of that time.

DDS: Tell us about The King Series.
The King Series follows Tasmyn Vaughn—a 17 year old girl who can hear thoughts --from her move to the small and mysterious town of King, Florida through her turbulent high school years.  Relocating to King is just the latest in a series of moves her family has made over the years, and Tas doesn’t expect much.  But within her first day in the new town, she meets both the love of her life and a dangerous enemy.   As Tasmyn basks in the glow of new love, she finds herself in a life or death struggle against powers she never dreamed existed.

DDS: What is the USP of this Series?
I think what makes this series unique is Tasmyn’s voice, which is not that of a typical teenager.  She has the advantage and the disadvantage of hearing thoughts, which gives her a singular perspective on people and situations. I think, too, the setting of King, with its historical meaning, sets The King Series apart from other YA books.

DDS: What was the hardest part about writing the book?
Knowing when to stop.  I never have a problem with making a book long enough; it’s realizing when I’ve said enough.

DDS: What are your writing pet peeves?
As a writer, the only pet peeve I have is writing blurbs. Condensing 100,000 words into four hundred or less is painful.  As a reader, I absolutely hate to see poorly edited books.

DDS: Who is your favourite Character? (one of your own creation – published/unpublished)
Nell is probably my favorite character, although Rafe is up there too!  They both have a good deal of history that they bring to the story.  And they will each have their own books down the road.

DDS: Now time for some fun facts about you. If ‘Fearless & Breathless’ were to be turned into a movie – which Actor/Actress would you like to see playing the characters?
This is hard because I never pictures my characters as actors!  Tasmyn would probably be someone like Sarah Hyland.   Michael could be played by Kevin Schmidt or a young Tom Welling—he needs that good guy vibe.  Nell would be Troian Bellisario.

DDS: Who is your favourite author & which is your favourite book? I know it is beyond difficult, but you can name only one in each category!!
Diana Gabaldon in historical fiction, Nora Roberts in thrillers and romance.

DDS: One thing readers would be surprised to know about you…
In this age of social media?  Probably not much! Well, maybe that I have four cats.  Or four children. Or that I am a really passionate football  fan. . .

DDS: Besides writing, what else do you enjoy?
I love reading, especially all the fantastic new indie authors publishing today. I also enjoy traveling, particularly to battlefields and other sites of historical importance.

DDS: What’s the one thing that you want your readers to take away from this book?
We all have gifts.  How we use those gifts is what determines our path in life.

DDS: Anything else you would like to say to your readers/fans?
A huge thank you to all of the readers who support The King Series! I love hearing from you. Your kind words give me such encouragement.  I’m thrilled to hear that these characters matter to you, too.
