Scent of Triumph is the story of Danielle Bretancourt, a talented young French perfumer with a flair for fashion and a natural olfactory gift. In the language of perfumery, she is a Nose, with the rare ability to recognize thousands of essences by memory. The story opens on the day England declares war on Germany, and Danielle and her family are caught in the midst of a raging disaster sweeping across Europe.
Her life takes a tragic turn when her husband and son are lost behind enemy lines. She spies for the French resistance, determined to find them, but is forced to flee Europe with fragments of her family. Destitute, she mines her talents to create a magnificent perfume that captures the hearts of Hollywood's top stars, then gambles again to win wealth and success as a couturier. Her intelligence and flair attracts the adoration of Jonathan Newell-Grey, of England's top shipping conglomerate, and Cameron Murphy, Hollywood's most charismatic star.
Danielle charts her course through devastating wartime losses and revenge; lustful lovers and loveless marriages; and valiant struggles to reunite her family. Set between privileged lifestyles and gritty realities, here is one woman's story of courage, spirit, and resilience.
Creator of Scentsa for Sephora, fragrance expert and author Jan Moran’s epic book is a sweeping saga based on the fictional life of a French perfumer and fashion designer.
San Diego, California - Jennifer Lopez did it. Coco Chanel did it. Elizabeth Taylor and Taylor Swift did it. Even Lady Gaga’s doing it. Doing what? Making millions with a blockbuster fragrance, that’s what. Bestselling author Jan Moran delves into the exclusive world of perfumery in her new novel, Scent of Triumph, an engaging story of a fictional French perfumer, Danielle Bretancourt. As the creator of Scentsa for Sephora (a digital touch screen fragrance finder), and author of the Rizzoli bestseller, Fabulous Fragrances, Jan Moran knows her subject matter well and weaves true-to-life details into the story. “Jan Moran is the new queen of epic romance,” says USA Today Bestselling author Rebecca Forster.
The Los Angeles Times proclaims Scent of Triumph “a World War II epic,” while Kirkus says it is “historical fiction carried by a complex, resourceful heroine with a nose for business.”
“In writing Scent of Triumph, I was inspired by forward-thinking women entrepreneurs of the 20th century in beauty and fashion, including Coco Chanel, Nina Ricci, Elizabeth Arden, Estée Lauder, Madame Carven, Mary Kay, and many others,” says Jan Moran. “These smart, gutsy, entrepreneurial women lived cinematic lives steeped in creative endeavors.” She adds, “Modern day female entrepreneurs in today’s beauty and fashion industry include Jo Malone, Bobbi Brown, and a host of celebrities, such as Beyoncé Knowles, Kim Kardashian, and Gwen Stefani.”
In Scent of Triumph, Jan Moran draws on her entrepreneurial experience in the perfume industry to create a vivid, compelling world. Equal parts artist and businesswoman, heroine Danielle Bretancourt enchants men and women alike with a magical perfume blended in France and launched in Hollywood, while World War II rages across the continents. Danielle charts her course through devastating wartime losses and revenge, lustful lovers and loveless marriages, and valiant struggles to reunite her family. Set between privileged lifestyles and gritty realities, Scent of Triumph is one woman’s story of courage, spirit, and resilience.
As a FiFi Award winner (from The Fragrance Foundation), the author’s expertise rings true with fragrance aficionados and professionals alike. Karen Adams, co-founder of Sniffapalooza, says “Scent of Triumph is a rich tapestry that weaves fragrance into an already compelling story of love and perseverance during WWII. Jan's skillful writing, combined with her wealth of olfactory knowledge, makes this a great read for all, but especially the perfume enthusiast.”
Nancy Arnott, A&E Television Networks adds. “Scent of Triumph offers action, suspense and romance as it follows its intrepid heroine through the turbulent years of World War II, from the depths of tragedy to the heights of success. Fragrance lovers will enjoy the skillful way in which scent is woven into the story...and how the heroine's experiences are filtered through her highly refined sense of smell.”
For the debut, Jan included a perfume she developed with leading French fragrance house, Mane, creator of many blockbuster fragrances on the market today (i.e., for Ferrragamo, Thierry Mugler, Bijan, etc.), and perfumer Marvel Fields, president of The American Society of Perfumers. In Scent of Triumph, the perfume was named Chimère, which was the actual code name of the fragrance during development. “The experience of creating a perfume, combined with my mother’s recollections of the 1940s, deeply inspired my writing,” says Jan. “Chimère was part of the aromatrack during my writing.” She adds, “Chimère is a rich, ambery floral Oriental parfum, hauntingly sensual, confident and elegant, reminiscent of the glamour era of vintage Hollywood.”
Some of the bestselling vintage perfumes mentioned in Scent of Triumph include Chanel No. 5 (1921), Guerlain’s Shalimar (1925) and Mitsouko (1919), and Caron’s Tabac Blond (1919).
Scent of Triumph is available as a print book on Amazon.com and other online retailers. Ebook versions include Kindle, B&N Nook, iBooks, Sony Reader, and other ebook readers.
