#Interview :: A.J. Raven, #Author of Arousing the Legacy

About the Author:

Writer of mystery/paranormal/crime books. Also like to read and write stuff on the internet...you know, blogging about TV shows, comic books, anime, manga, and all that stuff. Did my B.Sc (hons) in Bio-technology and B.A (hons) in Psychology. Currently doing M.Phil in Bio-technology so, hopefully that'll work out!
I have written six books in total, that make up two mystery series. 'Arousing the Legacy' is actually four books in the Colville Mystery series together! It features Anya, a female teenager, and her friends trying to survive paranormal occurrences. I've always been a fan of complex female character so, you'll see a lot of that in my books.
The other mystery series follows a bespectacled boy named Jerry as he tries to cope with high school drama, growing up, and solving crime cases in his town. The series includes two books "Missing in Somerville" and "The Game Master of Somerville". I am currently working on the third book!
Maybe the two series will have a cross-over in the near future. Who knows!

An Interview with the Author

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
I think I knew from the start. I would always come up with stories when I was young and played with my toys. However, the first time I picked up a pen to write was when I was 12 years old, back in 2002. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a writer.

What inspires you to write?
I don’t know. I guess I want to read more books that show characters that have faults but still try to do the right thing. I want characters to feel ‘human’ and relatable. I want more stories with complex female characters. Wanting to read stories I would like to read myself is what inspires me to write them down and share with the world.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?
I’ve always been a fan of paranormal and mystery stories. I want people to read how scary paranormal being like vampires, werewolves, and witches can be. Recent media have taken the ‘scare’ factor out of such fictional beings and I wanted to bring them back. That’s how I came up with the idea to write “Arousing the Legacy” and create “The Colville Mysteries” Series.

Is there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?
There definitely are. I think I wrote down a few chapters when I was 12 years old. It was a fantasy story involving a young woman. Those pages are still with me and somehow over the years those few chapters turned into a prequel to “The Colville Mysteries” Series I will hopefully write one day.

Tell us about your writing process.
I write when I find the time. It’s tough to regularly take out time when you also doing your M.Phil in Bio-technology as well. But when I do get the urge to write I just sit down and type the whole story out in a couple of weeks…academics be damned! Haha!

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?
For me my favorite scene in “Arousing the Legacy” is from Book 4: “The Moon”, when Anya and her friends work together to try and take down the werewolves after them. I loved writing that fast-paced and chilling scene.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?
I think all of my characters inherited some of my quirks and I mixed in a few extra things to make them unique and stand out from the crowd.

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?
I’ve read a lot of mystery, paranormal and fantasy books and I’m always on the lookout for my next favorite book. My favorite authors have to be R.L Stine, Christopher Pike, Emily Blunt and Emily Rodda. These writers have indeed influenced my writing and the kind of stories I write. They are the authors that made me love the mystery, paranormal and fantasy genres.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Write from the heart. You might not get a ton of readers at once and it might even take you years but you’ll definitely get there!

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?
That’s a tough one. I would love to have Halle Berry, Emma Watson, Lindsay Lohan, Holland Roden, Dylan O’Brian and Chris Colfer to be part of the cast!

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?
I mostly stay at home in front of my computer when I’m free. I also like to watch a lot of TV shows, movies, play videogames, read a ton of comics or just do yoga to relax myself.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?
Doing something that will live-on and benefit people even when I’m long gone.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.
I can vibrate my eyeballs very fast. I’m a very good listener. I can draw!

What do you have in store next for your readers?
Definitely another installment in “The Colville Mysteries” Series. There are still a lot of things Anya and her friends have to go through.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
I also have a YA/Mystery series that currently has two books “Missing in Somerville” (Book 1) and “The Game Master of Somerville” (Book 2).
It follows Jerry, a highschool teenager and his group of friends, who unexpectedly find themselves in dangerous mysteries and making sure they come out alive before time runs out. They also have a lot of highschool drama to deal with and figuring out things about themselves along the way. Both books have received rave reviews, especially on B&N, and I hope new readers will enjoy them too. The ebook versions of all my books are currently priced at just $0.99. So, check’em out!

The man who came to Colville knew there was something unique about the young men he was ordered to observe. They had been able to ward off a curse and survive a vampire attack. The man had spent most of the day observing the town and keeping an eye on the young men. One of them was ill and the man knew why. The other one had no idea he was being followed, but as far as the man was concerned, he was a below average werewolf at best. Still, there had to be a reason for a vampire to show up in Colville, other than creating two werewolf slaves.
Arousing the Legacy centers around the small town of Colville which appears to have been chosen by a paranormal power for a very deliberate purpose. It is up to a small group of friends to discover what that purpose is and why their town was chosen, all while encountering vampires, werewolves, and zombies, and fearing for their lives. But could one of their own be among the paranormal?

The beautiful young bride of the town’s wealthiest man has been missing for several months and rumors of her whereabouts are rampant. Some speak of murder at the hands of her husband. Others claim that the young beauty died at the hands of a jealous ex-boyfriend. She could have run away, but why would a woman throw away a life of luxury? When a group of friends begin to search for her, they quickly discover that their lives are in danger by those determined to keep the woman’s whereabouts unknown.

Unable to resist a mystery, Jerry uncovers an on-line gaming site referring to a ‘secret place’ for young people who feel they don’t fit in and a game master who promises them a world where they will belong. When the daily news headline reads, “Pritchett, James (31), Murderer, Escapes from Prison,” Jerry’s mind begins to race, and after a bit of research, he finds more about the elusive Mr. Pritchett. Guilty of murdering the Watts family, he escaped prison and was last seen not far from the city of Somerville. But is the escaped prisoner the game master?
