"Pup-isms"

The character of Pup has a very unique way of looking at life. His short and sometimes sarcastic observations can put all different types of situations into perspective. Some of the people working with me called them “Pup-isms.” Here is a short collection of wisdom from Pup that isn’t found in the novel.

1. Monday is karma’s revenge for what you intended to do on Friday night.
2. Neither lunch nor supper ever gets jealous that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is a lesson in that.
3. Neckties are the most illogical piece of clothing ever invented.
4. I asked my parents why I had to do what they said once, but only once.
5. Always hold the door open for a lady. Why? She may smile. That’s reason enough.
6. If two animals don’t get along, they stay away from each other. Why can’t humans learn to do that?
7. Working for someone else’s approval is like living on Jello. You’ll never feel satisfied.
8. Friday is a harsh mistress, bringing great joy but only visiting once a week.
9. There comes a point in life when you have to stop playing with lightsabers and Legos. I’ll let you know if I figure out when that is.
10. Life is like a sunny day: it can be a beautiful thing as long as you remember to put on the sunscreen.
11. I used to wonder what life would be like if things were different, but if they were different I would just imagine this life instead.
12. If someone laughs when you mess something up, just tell them “You’re welcome.” You probably stopped them from making the same mistake.
13. Arguing with yourself can actually be a lot of fun. At least, until you lose the argument.
14. Imagine how great life would be if all conflicts could be solved by playing Rock, Paper, Scissors!
15. You must never allow one moment to define your entire life. What if you are making a stupid face at that moment?
16. Weekends are your reward for making it through the week. Don’t you hate that everything has a price?
17. If someone tells you to speak your mind and you stay silent, it doesn’t mean that you’re clueless. It means that you’re smarter than you realize.
18. There are no free lunches, but I think that snacks are up for grabs!
19. I used to wonder why my dog stared at me all the time, then it occurred to me that she might be wondering why I never stare back.
20. Dedication, anger, love, and grief are like the TARDIS: bigger on the inside than they appear on the outside.

About the Book:

This is not the story of a hero.

So begins the story of one of the most distinctive heroes you'll ever meet. Drafted into a war he barely comprehends with no taste for combat, Pup will find himself thrust into the very center of the conflict. How he affects that conflict, and how this changes him and everyone around him, is the soul of this utterly unique war story.

Equal parts adventure and farce, tragedy and comedy, PUP introduces an unforgettable accidental hero to war literature, and announces Christopher Slater as a resonant new voice.

  1. Looks pretty interesting. Some of them are really profound.

  2. Sometimes the most profound things are sitting right in front of us. We just have a problem with connecting "A" to "B". Other things are just silly. Both situations help get us through life.
