The FIRST LIFE OF VIKRAM ROY (Dystopian Romance, Coming of Age, Thriller, Ruby Iyer Series, #1.5)

Ah! Vikram. Yes, I knew I had to write his story almost as soon as he appeared in the bar, trying to come to Ruby’s rescue but realising the only person she needed rescuing from was herself. Yes, of course he is tall, dark, handsome and brooding. And a cop too, (men in uniform, go figure!) But he wasn’t always like that. And even today, beneath that tough, slightly bored with the world exterior is a rather insecure young man. One whose past is first changed when his father brings his half-brother home one day, and then changed again when his family is shattered forever.

Vikram’s life is irrevocably linked to 26/11 and the modern threat of terrorism today. Worse he is helpless growing up, helpless to change how his parents treat his step-bro very differently from himself. He knows it’s wrong, but feels powerless and decides to accept the path laid out to him at every stage because it’s the sensible thing to do. Look out for himself, like so many of us do.
Yet, when he is put to the ultimate test, when he loses everything he holds dear, there is no looking back. He cannot hold back anymore. He has to accept Dr B’s challenge. But how much is he going to reveal to Ruby, and when?

Vikram spends his formative years in a boarding school, which helps him find a degree of independence and indeed distance from the going-ons at home and it the city of his birth. That forms him, makes him this slower, more considering person who likes to take his time making decisions. Much to Ruby’s exasperation. But even patient, easy going people have their limits. When you take them out of their comfort zone, and place them in completely unfamiliar surroundings and challenge them with extremes, well then, either they rise and prove themselves. Or die trying.
