#Interview with Lorna Dounaeva, #Author of May Queen Killers

About the Author:

Lorna Dounaeva is a quirky British crime writer who once challenged a Flamenco troupe to a dance-off. She is a politics graduate and worked for the British Home Office for a number of years, before turning to crime fiction. She loves books and films with strong female characters and her influences include Single White Female and Sleeping with the Enemy. She lives in Surrey, England with her husband and two small children who keep her busy wiping food off the ceiling and removing mints from USB sockets.

Interview with the Author:

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
I’ve known I wanted to write books since I was five. But I also wanted to illustrate my own books when I was little. So far, I haven’t done that!

What inspires you to write?
I write the stories I would like to read. Inspiration comes to me when I am doing anything other than writing. I could be shopping or playing with the kids in the park, and I’ll suddenly be struck by an idea.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?
I’ve always had a fascination with May Queens. They are a very British phenomenon. It is a tradition that only takes place in a few towns and villages in Britain (although I believe the idea has been exported to Canada and possibly other places abroad.) The May Queen is like a carnival queen, someone who waves to the crowd and presides over May Day festivities.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?
Yes, I have a manuscript that I plan to return to soon!

Tell us about your writing process.
First, I create a plan. Then I completely ignore the plan and write something totally different.

What is your favorite scene from a book?
That famous scene from Gone with the Wind, where Rhett says “My dear, I don’t give a damn!”

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Write fast and get your first story down. You can edit it later if you like it and if you don’t, move on to the next one.

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?
I would choose Kate Winslet to play Sapphire, the heroine in May Queen Killers.

If you were to be stranded on the famous deserted island, what three things would you carry?
My Kindle, a charger and some kind of energy source.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.
- I love the Eurovision Song Contest.
- I once went to Austria by mistake.
- I have failed my driving test four times (and counting.)

What do you have in store next for your readers?
I am currently working on the sequel to my first novel, FRY and I have another series underway.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
I love hearing from readers. There’s nothing nicer than receiving an email from someone who has enjoyed one of my books!

About her Book:

Sapphire Butterworth disappears in the middle of May Day celebrations in the quiet village of Fleckford. Mystery writer, Jock Skone is one of the last to see Sapphire and determined to use his detective skills to find her. But Jock quickly discovers that Sapphire’s friends do not know her as well as they thought they did. And Sapphire is not the first May Queen to go missing. Is there a deeper reason why Sapphire wanted the title so badly? Does she know more about the May Queen Killers than she’s been letting on?

May Queen Killers is a very British thriller set on the English/Welsh border.
