#Contest :: Meet the characters from The Rise of the Grey Prince by Arka Chakrabarti

That cursed night at Nisarga had revealed the true reason behind his father's sacrifice and his own dark past. Each revelation now draws Agni into the sublime world of secrets. With Vrish and Guru Sidak by his side, fighting the daggers from the past and winning over the opponents of the present, somewhere deep down, he knows that his journey has just begun.

The other scarred prince walks the ashes of his reality. Haunted by the glimpses of truth the same night, Yani had but one choice – to survive. His unknowing steps, trapped in cruel games of ancient powers had led him to a truth, a truth which shall mould a good man in the clay of misfortune, hate and lust.

Such is the world of Gaya, and thus shall be the Rise of the Grey Prince – the one torn between the darkness of evil and a lone ray of hope.

A reluctant vampire hunter, stalking New York City as only a scorned bride can.
Elle Dupree has her life all figured out: first a wedding, then her Ph.D., then swank faculty parties where she’ll serve wine and cheese and introduce people to her husband the lawyer.

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire draining the blood from her fiancé Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs--not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.

As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning around to face them, Elle discovers that Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

Excerpt
The worst thing about vampires is that they're dead. That whole wanting to suck your blood business runs a close second, but for sheer creepiness, it's the dead bit that gets me every time. They're up and walking around and talking and sucking blood, but they're dead. And then there's the whole terminology problem--how can you kill something that's already dead? It's just wrong.
I was twenty-four the first time I . . . destroyed? dispatched? . . . a vampire. That's when I found out that all the books and movies are wrong. When you stick a wooden stake into their hearts, vampires don't disintegrate into dust. They don't explode. They don't spew blood everywhere. They just look surprised, groan, and collapse into a pile of corpse. But at least they lie still then, like corpses are supposed to.
Since that first kill (I might as well use the word--there really isn’t a better one), I've discovered that only if you're lucky do vampires look surprised before they groan and fall down. If you're unlucky and miss the heart, they look angry. And then they fight.
There are the other usual ways to kill vampires, of course, but these other ways can get a bit complicated. Vampires are notoriously difficult to trick into sunlight. They have an uncanny ability to sense when there's any sunlight within miles of them, and they're awfully good at hiding from it. Holy water doesn't kill them; it just distracts them for a while, and then they get that angry look again. And it takes a pretty big blade to cut off someone's head--even an already dead someone--and carrying a great big knife around New York City, even the Bronx, is a sure way to get arrested. Nope, pointy sticks are the best way to go, all the way around.
My own pointy stick is actually more of a little knife with wood inlay on the blade--the metal makes it slide in easier. I had the knife specially made by an old Italian guy in just about the only ratty part of Westchester, north of the city. I tried to order one off the internet, but it turns out that while it’s easy to find wood-inlay handles, the blades themselves tend to be metal. Fat lot those people know.
But I wasn’t thinking any of this when I pulled the knife out of the body on the ground. I was thinking something more along the lines of “Oh, bloody hell. Not again.”

#SpecialFeature :: What are the early readers saying about The Uncommon Memories of Zeenat Qureishi

*** Special Feature - March 2015 ***

About the Author

She was ten when she was caught reading in the bathroom late into the night.  Her mother banned her from reading ‘story books’ for a whole month. She decided if she couldn’t read, she’d write her own stories. That night in a naval apartment in the then city of Bombay, Veena Nagpal’s passion for writing was born.
She now lives in a small house with her husband and lots of plants in a suburb of New Delhi.
The Uncommon Memories of Zeenat Qureishi is Veena’s third novel to be published. She has also penned four books for children and numerous short stories. Her two previous novels are, Karmayogi (Jaico) and Compulsion (Sterling).
Her four children’s books are, Adventures in Sapace and Time Travellers (IBH), Smuggler’s Isle (Hemkunt), Tenderella and the FoFs (EEP) and Garbie Garbyhog – The Worm That Wanted To Fly (EEP).

Reviews of the Book

Veena has portrayed the religious turbulence brilliantly… Life-like characters make up the story. Zeenat is superb as a young tormented soul in need of love.
… a candid attempt to explore the religious fabric of India without taking any sides.
- Bookgeeks

The novel is fast paced and action packed. Veena has skilfully created a rich tapestry with ancient and contemporary history interwoven into the narrative. She does not flinch from delving into the clash between religious bigots of different persuasions, but the underlying message which emerges is of humanity and hope shining through the travails of the main protagonists, Zeenat and Ajay.
Veena’s novel is marked by the rich imagery conjured up by her evocative descriptions of scenes and places. One is almost transported into another world and another time, and the sights, sounds, and smells so vividly recreated have turned reading of this novel into an eminently immersive experience.
The projection of Zeenat’s past life memories awakened by regression therapy as TV broadcasts which override over all other TV transmissions may strain one’s credulity as being technically impossible, but this has been intertwined with the story with such consummate skill that one would not quibble.
All in all, this is an eminently readable book and one to be highly recommended.

It is a story that is different and unusual. Loved the way the story was woven. Some of the scenes for e.g. where the girl is in the forest and dancing for the soldiers, were so brilliantly written that I could just visualize it whilst I was reading it.

The narrative held my interest throughout the book.

I experienced a certain sort of enigma in her writing that kept me glued till I read the finishing sentence of the book. I was all drenched with a mixed feeling of disturbance and relief; a mixed feeling of feeling like crying and being happy as if I have accomplished something

#BookReview :: Unlucky 13 (Women's Murder Club #13) by James Patterson

When two dead bodies are found inside a wrecked car on the Golden Gate Bridge, Detective Lindsay Boxer doubts that it will be anything as simple as a traffic accident. The scene is more gruesome than anything she has seen before. It definitely wasn't the crash that killed these people. While Lindsay starts to piece this case together, she gets a call she wasn't expecting. Sightings of her ex-colleague-turned-ruthless-killer Mackie Morales have been reported.

Wanted for three murders, Mackie has been in hiding since she escaped from custody. But now she's ready to return to San Francisco and pay a visit to some old friends.

Goodreads I Amazon

First there is the case of the burger bombs and it seems that a mad scientist is on the loose – one that Lindsay has to track down before he brings down more bodies. Then there is Yuki & Brady’s interrupted honeymoon when their cruise ship is hijacked by pirates. And then there is the matter of Mackie who is back in town with the intent of revenge on SFPD’s finest. How does the Women’s murder club handle each situation? Will they be able to handle things on their own as they are separated? Will Mackie finally emerge on top?

Out of the thirteen Women’s Murder Club Novels, I have read just four, including this one. I have missed the one with Mackie in it. Though her return is hyped and she is labeled dangerous, I really did not get the feel of it. I wish I had read the noel where she was the main antagonist. Also, while the multiple storylines makes way for more action and intrigue, I would really have liked to see more team action from the novel.  Certain personal relationships of one of the protagonist feel forced and not quite normal in the book. Also, it felt like the author has hurried to tie up loose ends and forced certain hands in the plot to make it move.

While it has tons of action and drama like most Patterson Novels, and the short chapters keep us intrigued, in the end the book feels quite disappointing with major loopholes and abnormal factors.

#BookReview :: God is a Gamer by Ravi Subramanian

Aditya runs a gaming company that is struggling to break even. A banker slips off a highrise building, plunging to her death. The finance minister has made some promises that he is finding hard to keep. The LTTE has unleashed terror in America that sends the FBI on a wild goose chase, bringing them to Mumbai.

Enter Varun, parttime drug dealer and fulltime genius. He turns around the gaming company before disaster strikes. Meanwhile, the investigators plunge headlong into the shady world of bitcoins and the Dark Net, websites that only exist for illegal transactions—drugs, sex and money. God Is a Gamer culminates in a stunning climax where money means nothing, assassination is taught by the ancient Greeks, and nothing is as it seems.

Goodreads I Amazon

On one hand we have the death of Malvika, a banker, who falls off a high rise building. On the other hand we have Arjun, a struggling entrepreneur, whose business seem to get a strong foothold once Varun, a part time drug dealer, joins him. Meanwhile, a meeting between the President of Mastercard International and the CEO of the Visa International is underfoot while another meeting in the US could have a huge impact on the global market. And how does the world of bitcoins, virtual money, fit in the whole plot?

The first thing about this novel is its plot and sub-plots. There is a lot going on to keep the readers going. Spanning over different continents, from India to USA, the story is a rollercoaster ride. Finely woven into tangles, the reader has to work with the author to untangle all the threads and reach the conclusion. The narration of the story has been broken into short chapters, taking us from one end of the world to another, are really not as effective as the ones that James Patterson produces. It did feel a bit abrupt as sometimes a chapter would all of a paragraph leaving me thinking – ‘wait, I want to know more there’.

Another aspect of any book is its characters. ‘God is a Gamer’ has a whole bunch of them while none of them actually stand out. It was hard for me to connect to any of the characters sometimes because of the lack of background and sometimes because of the style of narration. They are there to give the plot a certain direction, yet none of them really makes an impression. Neither the protagonist, nor the antagonist made me want to root for them. And even after finishing the whole book, I cannot say I know even one character completely.

I have loved Ravi Subramain’s previous works, and have been looking forward to this one, especially what with the concept of bitcoins being promoted so much. But I was sorely disappointed this time. This book has a lot of action, thrills and keeps you turning the pages. Yet overall it fails miserably if you have read the author’s previous works.

#BookReview :: The Temple Is Not My Father by Rasana Atreya

Ensnared by a tradition hundreds of years old, a woman fights for her daughter’s happiness.

From the author of 'Tell A Thousand Lies,' which was shortlisted for the 2012 Tibor Jones South Asia award. UK's Glam magazine calls 'Tell A Thousand Lies' on of their 'five favourite tales from India.'

If you like Rohinton Mistry or Shilpi Somaya Gowda, you might like this short story of 40 pages.

Goodreads I Amazon

Oh My GOD! Yes, that was my first reaction when the book ended. For a short novella of forty odd pages, ‘The Temple is not My Father’ is a hell of a roller coaster ride.

The story tells us about the journey of Godavari. At the tender age of 8, Godavari was dedicated to the temple and became a devadasi. The journey from there on has been filled with thorns and hurdles and yet the lady never loses her spunk. The story also tells us about her daughter Sreeja, a youngling who is innocent and full of questions. Then there are Sreeja’s second cousins Vanaja and Neeraja who play their roles to the fullest in this short story.

It is impossible to summarise the story without giving out spoilers and besides, I do not think I have words for the emotional roller coaster that it put me through. However, the book deals with some serious issues that women of this age and time still face. They are serious issues that have been dealt in a sensitive manner. Also, hearing the story from Godavari’s point of view essentially helps a reader to get into the mind of a lady who has been victimized her whole life even when she was not at fault. It gives us a new perspective of how such a lady might see the world and herself. The book left me with so many questions that I wish so badly that it was longer. But after a few days of retrospection, I feel that the author has chosen the right way to end the story. More information wouldn’t necessarily bring closure and this way, we are left to give the story its own happy ending.

I listened to the audiobook version produced by Read Out loud and narrated by Shruti Kapdi. The narrator has done a splendid job of bringing each character to life with her voice. From Godavari’s modesty filled tone to Sreeja’s innocence to the American accent of Neeraja and Vanaja, each character has been distinctively portrayed in the audio version.

Now go do what you have to do to get your hands on this book!

#BookReview :: After the Goode (A Jake Roberts #3) by Cary Allen Stone

Jake Roberts' superiors in Atlanta Homicide gave him a choice––retire, or face criminal prosecution. Jake went beyond the rules to capture serial killer Jared Hamilton. Jake decided to retire and move to Los Angeles with his Hollywood agent girlfriend Caitland where he writes best-selling crime novels. They decide to take a mini-vacation to visit his best friend in Phoenix. Bobby Goode is a superstar comedian. During his opening night in Phoenix, he humiliates a heckler. After the show, the heckler stalks Bobby with a baseball bat. Defending himself, Bobby shoots the man. He panics from the fear that he will lose his fame and fortune if anyone finds out. At the crime scene, Phoenix homicide detectives Wynter Williams and Vince Farina investigate a charred body and torched Cadillac. They invite Jake to consult on the case. Jake later determines that it is Bobby they are looking for. On closing night, inside the comedy club, Jake and Wynter arrive to arrest Bobby––"Shots fired!"

Goodreads I Amazon

A lot has changed for Jake Roberts since the last book. When Jake crossed lines to do whatever it takes to capture Jared, he was asked to retire as the easy way out. Since then Jake has moved to Los Angeles with his girlfriend and has taken to writing crime-novels. However, Jake being Jake, his life is never dull. He gets embroiled in a murder case while vacationing in Phoenix and is asked to consult on the case. But the murderer seemed a step ahead all along. Will Jake be able to do his magic again?

As I have come to expect from Jake Roberts Novels, this was not whodunit guessing mystery. The culprit is out in the open right from the beginning. Bobby Goode is a superstar standup comedian who ends up murdering a heckler who had stalked him after a show. Scared of what might happen if he was found out, Bobby befriended the lead detective on the case to keep tabs on the investigation. Wynter Williams on the other hand is an interesting character, and I would have loved to know about her.

The plot was interesting in itself and as the story progressed, it kept the readers on their edge. With a fast pace, the pages turned on its own accord and felt like ended too soon. The character of Jake Roberts developed further making him more likeable than ever. I however wish the story had more to offer on the side characters. A good follow up on the series. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next instalment in the series that I hear is in the works.

#Interview with Ian Thomas Malone, #Author of A trip Doen Reality Lane

Ian Thomas Malone is an author and a yogi from Greenwich, CT. He is a graduate of Boston College, where he founded The Rock at Boston College. He is the grandson of noted Sherlockian scholar Colonel John Linsenmeyer. Ian has published thousands of articles on diverse subjects such as popular culture, baseball, and social commentary. His favorite things to post on social media are pictures of his golden retriever Georgie and his collection of stuffed animals.
Ian believes firmly that “there’s more to life than books you know, but not much more,” a quote from his hero Morrissey. When he’s not reading, writing, or teaching yoga, he can probably be found in a pool playing water polo. He aspires to move to the Hundred Acre Wood someday, though he hopes it has wi-fi by then.

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
I always had an interest in telling stories. I used to draw comics when I was little. My drawing abilities failed to progress past a kindergarten level, but I stuck with the story element. I’ve been writing articles since I was eleven. My interests have always been eclectic and I found the internet was the best place for me to share thoughts on topics that my peers weren’t interested in.

What inspires you to write?
I’m inspired by ideas that claw at me nonstop. I get many ideas, most of which get tossed out, but the ones that refuse to go away are the ones that inspire me.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?
I’ve always been very interested in the 60s psychedelic movement. People tend to forget that Jack Nicholson started off with films like Easy Rider, The Trip, and Psych-Out. LSD has always been more mainstream that people realize. It was a fun topic to write about.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?
Probably some comics I mentioned earlier! I have a couple unfinished short stories that will get finished eventually and a poetry collection that isn’t ready yet.

Tell us about your writing process.
It’s chaotic. I tend to let ideas develop in my head for months (sometimes years) at a time before I starting them. There’s always few slow cooking at a time. I like to finish first drafts in about a month. Lots of tea and not a lot of sleep.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?
There’s a scene where the narrator and James are struggling to get an automatic faucet to turn on in the bathroom. Those faucets can be a pain even if you’re not tripping!

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?
The narrator and I both enjoy stuffed animals!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
I can’t write without tea, coffee, or seltzer on my desk. I don’t need to drink it, but it needs to be there. I work around this though. If I’ve had too much, I brew cheaper tea.

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?
Of course I read. Vonnegut and Faulkner are my two biggest influences. I love what they do with the form and how they were never afraid to break the rules. Both also had excellent moustaches. Probably not a coincidence.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Rejection is rarely personal. Agents/publishers typically have very specific needs and if your work isn’t a fit, you probably won’t get considered. Never let it affect your writing!

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?
Narrator would be played by me, Charles by David Bowie, and James by Edward James Olmos.

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?
I love read, swim, and practice yoga. My favorite place to unwind is any bookstore I can find. Being around books is comforting.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?
I’d love to travel to Pune, India and study at the Iyengar Yoga Institute. B.K.S. Iyengar is a tremdous influence on my philosophy. I was very sad when he died last year.

What do you have in store next for your readers?
My next book is actually out in a month! It’s the sequel to Five College Dialogues, appropriately titled Five More College Dialogues. I’m in the middle of editing a new novel and hope to have lots of fun stuff on the horizon for my readers.

College life can be tough...
For a junior pursuing a degree in English with no plans for his future, living in the present is far better than the alternative.
One morning he wakes up and embarks on an acid trip to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with two of his friends.
A step outside reality might be the best way to come back down to earth...
Along the way, the three friends discover what matters most to them, and more importantly, that life is not so much about answers as it is about the exploration of the questions.
When the real world doesn't quite cut it, take a journey down the rabbit hole

#BookReview :: Candy from a Stranger by Daryl Buckner

Child abduction told by the father, but has he gone insane?

What would you do if your child went missing and the police were ineffective? Exactly. You would start investigations yourself.
When eight-year-old Lucas Cain is snatched, his father, Ben, dedicates his life to finding out what happened to his only child. His desperation leads to his life being torn to shreds: his marriage in tatters, his job lost and even his mind is altered. They all believe Ben has gone insane. Has he? Self-fulfilling prophecy kicks in as Ben starts to believe he may well have had a role in the disappearance. The police close in on him just as he is about to uncover the complex mystery.

Goodreads I Amazon

When an eight year old boy, Lucas, is kidnapped and the police make no progress in the case, the child’s father takes on the case on his own. He becomes kind of obsessed about finding his child. In the process, he alienates his wife, loses his job and takes to drinking. At one point he feels like he is not making any progress either. People think that he has gone crazy and his nightmares don’t help much. But then another child goes missing and Ben gets to the crime scene to try and discern whether the kidnappings are related or not. With the police deriding him, he thinks he has found a pattern and races against time to connect the dots… But will they lead him anywhere? Will the police be of help or a hindrance to him? Does he have any chance of finding his son alive?

The book is totally and completely gripping right from the beginning. The character of Ben is such that the reader never really gets a complete read on him till the very end. At one point the reader empathizes with him because losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a parent. But then his attitude and actions cause the reader to sympathize with him thinking that the loss may have been too much for him to handle and that he is going mad. Then there is a point where one wonders whether he might have been actually responsible in some way for his son’s kidnapping and suspicion falls on him. With so many angles going on at the same time, it was really hard to get a complete read on Ben and that was what kept me going. I just had to find out!

I also liked the twists that came along the way of the plot. The author’s narration style is a bit different and it took me some time to get used to it. But once I got into the groove, I totally enjoyed it. The descriptions and the settings are a bonus.

A complete thriller!

First Book in the Series:
Is one born with his destiny or does he forge it?
In the mystical land of Gaya, two prophecies bind the fate of men and empires alike. The Destroyer born from the royal seed on the Land of the Setting Sun shall bring the empires down, or so has been foretold.
In between the Destroyer and the world stand the Seven Guardians of Gaya, guarding the realm of man. A king, a father, defies the Seven and fate itself to save the last drop of his blood and prince Agni grows in the Land of the Rising Sun, exiled from his own people, unaware of his past.
Losing the woman he loved most to the shadows in the dark, Agni is thrown into a whirlpool of events that he neither knows, nor understands. His quest for vengeance brings him to the doorstep of a secret that will shatter the very foundation of beliefs of a world.
Can Agni avert his destiny? Can he uncover the truth about the Seven and the prophecies, now hidden behind a veil of ignorance?
The secrets of the dark are sometimes so terrible that they are better left unsaid.

About the Book
Two young cousins hell-bent on restoring Muslim glory, even if it means importing terror. An incendiary Hindu religious leader with one mantra, 'Break-mosques, build- temples.'
Zeenat Qureishi has one question, "What's my name? Why can't you tell me my name?"
Traumatized in the aftermath of the London Tube bomb- ing, the phobic 20-year-old comes to India. Long before Zeenat was born, the eldest Qureishi brother, his wife, and six-year-old daughter Zainab were murdered.
Zeenat's family believed the Mehras, their Hindu family friends, responsible and the friendship turned sour. Wild and impetuous Zeenat promptly falls in love with Ajay Mehra. Faced with proof that he was involved in the demolition of a mosque, she scorns him.
Disturbed, Zeenat undergoes regression therapy in an atmosphere of paranoia and uncovers memories so powerful that she can project them. Communal bitterness that has simmered for centuries threatens to explode around her and Zeenat tries to find answer in the past that will help her understand and heal the present.
