Blurb for Space Cowboy Blues:

Join in for a chat with the hero, Josh Reynolds, space cowboy, and the heroine, Melynas, an alien from the blue planet Albastra.
If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Josh: I would saddle my horse and ride towards the sunset… I love exploring new landscapes. The prairie on Planet 2215, Albastra, reminds me of the ranch back home. Apart from the blue color of the grass.Melynas: I’d go for a walk in the old city, where my ancestors used to live. It’s uninhabited now, but still beautiful. I love to explore its streets and discover new buildings. They still glow at night, like towers of luminous glass.
If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?
Josh: Neil Eriksson, the first human to circumnavigate the Milky Way. Like him I’d love to leave my mark on the world, do something that no one has done before.Melynas: One of the kings of old who used to rule this land. I’d ask them how the city works, what makes the buildings glow. So we could maintain the city as it should be, and one day perhaps move back into it.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?
Josh: I thought perfect happiness was to be free, to roam from planet to planet. I’m a space cowboy. On each planet, I examine the animals that might be used like cattle or horses, take pictures and samples for the science boffins back on Earth, pocket my fee… then I’m off. To the next job… the next planet… But now, on Albastra, I’m beginning to think that maybe happiness is to find a place that I can call home. With a woman at my side, that I can call wife.Melynas: To live a good life, in my community, with a man at my side, that would be perfect happiness for me. But all the boys and young men leave the planet, because there are no jobs for them here. I wish I could find a way to restore my people’s prosperity, so the men would not have to leave. And I could find a partner, love and be loved…
What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?
Josh: Confidence. On Albastra too many settlers from Earth are over-confident, arrogant even. They don’t treat the locals as equals, and don’t make any effort to learn about their new world or adapt to it. They just expect it to adapt to them.Melynas: Independence. I have to be independent – I have little choice as I am on my own and have to support myself by working for the settlers from Earth. But we are nothing on our own. My ancestors built a wonderful civilisation, because they worked together. I would like to be part of a community again. A family.
Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.
Josh: I grew up on a ranch. I learned to ride before I could walk. I think I can form a bond very quickly with any animal… I charm the hunoowins, the blue unicorns of Albastra, with some dried apples. I’m very polite, even to robots. Well, some of them are smarter than me!Melynas: I have blue skin and green hair. I work as a guide for the human settlers from Earth, one of my jobs is to welcome new arrivals and show them around the Dome, the protected area where Earth people live. Albastra, my planet, is riddled with micro organisms that are deadly to humans, but the Dome is a sterile place. Inside the Dome humans can move freely, but when I go in, I have to be thoroughly disinfected and wear protective gear, otherwise I might infect a human. I’m afraid of some of the settlers. When they look at me with their hard and greedy eyes, I’m glad that they can’t touch me. But Josh is different.
