Meet Ryan from Ryan's Temptation

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Ryan: I have no idea. I’m a doctor, so I’m used to always being on call, always being on the go. I’m a bit of a workaholic, actually. But if I really didn’t have anything to do or worry about, I’d take a trip to the mountains and go hiking, or maybe biking. Perhaps whitewater rafting. I love being outdoors, but I don’t often have the time to enjoy nature. I live in Denver, Colorado, and while it’s a great city, the majestic Rocky Mountains are only a jump away. I wish I could spend more time there.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Ryan: I’d choose my dad. He died from diabetes-related complications when I was ten. Before he passed on, I was a normal, carefree kid and only cared about video games and ice cream. Afterward, I spent more time playing outside to keep active, and I studied more to do better in school. Losing him changed the course of my life. I wanted to become a doctor so I could help people.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

Ryan: I find my perfect happiness almost every evening when I come home from work. My girlfriend, Chanel, and I live together, and I love when we settle down on the sofa with a glass of wine and watch a movie. I prefer action flicks or dramas, but I don’t mind the sappy romance movies Chanel sometimes picks out.
My frame of mind is so much better than it used to be. Between stressing about work and the trouble I landed in when Chanel and I first met would drive anyone a little crazy. Things have long since improved.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Ryan: Pride. Back in school, I married my college sweetheart, Kate. I loved her, but our jobs and responsibilities drew us apart. I should’ve listened when she told me she was unhappy, but I let my pride get in the way. Even though I’m happy with Chanel and love her more than life itself, I wish I would’ve been a better husband to Kate. Though, if I had been, we might still be married. I can’t see anyone but Chanel in my life, so I wouldn’t change what happened with Kate if I could.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

Ryan: Hmm, let’s see…I once faced down a gunman in the ER at the hospital where I used to work, I love margaritas, and I can’t sing worth a damn. Really, I sound like a dying frog. It’s pretty pathetic.

Meet BENJI the black Labrador from Brown Eyes by Frances Ive

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

That’s easy for me. I’d like to be off the lead at the beach, with one of the family standing watching. And I’d like Rosie, the lovely boxer dog, to be there as well. We could frolic and play in the waves and not care about anything else.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

This is more difficult as a lot of things have changed. I would have said Phil, but he has behaved very badly lately and Meriel isn’t herself at all. So, I am going to suggest that Elly, the daughter in my family, would be best. I like the way she enjoys life with her friends – she isn’t an adult yet so she laughs and giggles and forgets about the bad things.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

I have already had perfect happiness, and it has been shattered by events in my family. My life was good, I had regular walks, food quite often (although an extra meal wouldn’t have gone amiss), delightful owners and everything was easy. I am not sure I knew how perfect it was until things went wrong, and now I am devastated.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

I am very loyal and I think that’s important. I would do anything for my owners. But maybe loyalty is not what it should be with humans. Phil is the father and husband in my family and he has been disloyal now. I am shocked that he can do what he did and cause people I thought he loved lots of unhappiness.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

 - I secretly really like the cat, but I don’t want to look as if I’m too soft, so occasionally in the garden I chase it.  But if it wants to get into my bed and cuddle up to me, I find it comforting, particularly at the moment.
- I love eating but I think I need more meals than I get One day I went into the  neighbours’ house chasing a delicious smell. I grabbed something pink and large on a table, just my height. I got back through the hole in the fence and chewed away at the crunchy red bits. That filled me up.
- Sometimes there is a fox in the garden and I am shut inside. I go mad to get it as foxes make me huff and puff. All I can do is jump up at the big windows and one day I broke the glass. No-one knows how it happened.

#CharacterInterview - Meet Jo, Maggie & David from Finding Jo by Frances Ive - #WomensFiction @healthysouluk

Overwhelmed by her dysfunctional family and possessive boyfriend, Jo leaves without telling a soul. The trip to India takes her to Delhi and on the iconic train journey up to the Himalayas. She arrives at the Jasanghari retreat, a former palace with its backdrop of pine forests and snow-capped mountains.
New friendships evolve, while Jo starts to unravel the inner turmoil that drove her to behave in an uncharacteristic way. Her personal journey is both heart-warming and inspirational.
Yet even paradise has its unexpected challenges which push her growing peace of mind to the limit and put the quest for happiness in jeopardy.
Finding Jo offers an insight into the misunderstandings, resentment and grievances that build up in close relationships, the secrets and lies that often arise within families. Can they be healed?

Meet Jo Greaves, 32, the main protagonist in Finding Jo

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

I have surprisingly few responsibilities at present as I am relaxing in a Himalayan retreat. No job, no family, no boyfriend to answer to – unlike before. It seems like the perfect life, so on a typical day I would do some yoga for a couple of hours, read my book in the palace gardens, with the snow-capped mountains in the background.  If I were at home, I’d go to the beach outside Bristol, read and swim. Of course, if it were winter I think a day at a spa would be a great treat.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Since I’ve been in the Himalayas I’ve been intrigued to know that the Dalai Lama is living on the other side of these mountains and I’d love to meet him.  What I adore about him is that he is always happy and laughing – well he is whenever I see him on TV or videos. He has a positive approach to life, which is based on his Buddhist principles. He is cheerful, sensible, and optimistic, even though life has presented him with a lot of serious challenges.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

I just crave peace of mind and would love to stop my buzzing mind churning over things and making me insecure.  My current state of mind is positive because having all this time for myself in a retreat is helping me to become less anxious, happier and at long last - true to myself. I have always put up with too much from people in my family and my boyfriend. I am becoming more assertive and jnot just doing what other people want me to. Most of all I am learning to speak my truth and I feel that this is going to help me to be a more contented person.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Pride – is it really a virtue? It can make someone very stubborn.  I have heard people say that they are very proud of their children or their partners, or friends and that’s fine. But sometimes people say, ‘He’s got his pride,’ and it seems to me to be rather stubborn.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

I was so uncompetitive because I wanted to be liked. This meant that if I beat other people in certain subjects I felt bad about it. Consequently, I played it down. But when it really mattered and I had exams I did very well because I worked hard. This meant my classmates were quite surprised!
I had a boyfriend when I was 16 whom my parents didn’t really like, because they thought he would lead me astray as he was older.  So I met him in secret. I’m normally such an honest person, but I lied about where I was for the six months I was seeing him.
As a child, I liked going to other people’s houses so I could get out of mine. I didn’t realise this at the time, but now I am understanding my behaviour more and more there was a feeling that I felt more relaxed away from my siblings and my warring parents.

Meet Maggie, Jo’s mother

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

The sad thing is that there is very little that I want to do when I’m not working.  As you’re asking me, I would most likely say that I’d take myself off alone to the coast and walk along by the sea, have a coffee and carry on walking.  I am not convinced that this is enjoying myself, as it feels a bit like escaping from everything and everyone.  But when I think about it, it has always made me feel better and less depressed. Maybe that’s because I always need to get away.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

There aren’t many people I admire that much, certainly not living now.  So I would choose an inspirational writer – William Shakespeare.  How can anyone write so many plays that are still popular and on stage all over the world five centuries later?  I would like to ask him how where his inspiration came from.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

I’ve never experienced perfect happiness so I wouldn’t know. Except maybe as a 15/16 year old when my life seemed to be fun. Just getting more positive about life is a new experience for me. I think I’ve always been a depressive person. Now I’m going to travel to Africa and help people by doing voluntary work. Maybe the new feeling of freedom will make me happy.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

People often describe someone as very easy going. In fact, my husband Mark is one of those people whom everyone including our children think is an easy person.  I think ‘easy going’ masks a lot of subtle characteristics that people don’t always recognise or see.  He is very careful not to be seen as doing anything wrong, but believe me I know that he is not trustworthy and if they knew what he was doing they wouldn’t think he was so appealing.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

I only got married to Mark because it’s what people like me did in those days.  You went out with someone for a while, you got on OK and the next step was marriage followed by babies. It seemed that if I could have a husband I would feel better about myself. That worked for a short time, but it catches up with you and I ended up regretting it. Doing anything because of deep insecurity doesn’t seem to work out very well, and 30 years of marriage with someone who is clearly not that dedicated to me has been the result.
I never really wanted children, which is quite amazing because I had three. Again, it shows how weak I was, but I was swept up in what was expected of me.  I don’t think was a very good mother because I hadn’t made a positive decision to have them.
When I was a child I was good at acting, which is very strange as I couldn’t do it now. I think I needed once again to escape so I was able to be someone else for a while which I loved.

Meet David, Jo’s friend at the retreat

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

If you’d asked me three months ago I’d have said that I wanted to spend some time with a beautiful girl, wining and dining, but I am surprised to realise that since being in this retreat I’ve changed.  I love cricket, so I think one of my most relaxing days would be to go and watch a test match in India or somewhere else exotic and I could even go on my own – which is really different for me as I always used to need to be with someone. This idea feels quite liberating.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

That’s not a difficult question for me as I love sport and admire various sportsmen. There was a  famous basketball player, Michael Jordan, who was known for being a winner. He would bend the world to his will through the sheer force of his intensity. He empowered other athletes. One of his best quotes was, ‘I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.’ It must be great to feel like him and not have self-doubt.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

State of mind, that’s a tricky one to answer. I think I must be co-dependent. My happiness tends to rely on having someone I love around me, but I don’t seem to appreciate them when I have them. So I always seem to be striving for something I want that I can’t have.  And that’s happening at the moment. I keep persisting but to no avail.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Being jovial and making people laugh- that’s me. But when the laughing stops, I am not as happy as I seem. I cover up my insecurities with my joking and people love it. I have always thought of myself as a lovable rogue, but I’m not sure that I want to be that person now. Because underneath it all I must have quite low self-esteem or I wouldn’t have treated my partners like I did, nor had such a drinking habit.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

I got into trouble when I was quite young and mixing with the wrong people. So I had to do community service – when you do some work but don’t get paid for it, instead of going to prison. I found out what it was like to do jobs I’d never normally do and meet people unlike anyone else I knew.
When I was younger I played the guitar. Every time I went out with a girl I wrote a song about her and played it to her. I must say they all thought I was wonderful (for a short while).
I once made a fire on a very dry field in the middle of summer. It grew and grew until my mother saw the flames and telephoned the fire service. She was not pleased.

Russell's marriage to the golden girl, however, ended in a nasty divorce, and he has been systematically excluded from his sons' lives. His group of single dad advocates have vowed to take this woman down.

What Russell doesn't know, when he thinks to rekindle what he had with Marisol, is that Marisol and Jerrika are one and the same. When his group discovers the truth, will their drive for revenge derail any chance the couple have to reunite? Or will they find they have more in common than they ever expected?

Meet Marisol & Russell from A Rose by Any Other Name

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

MARISOL:  I’d have coffee on my little garden patio and spend some time tending my plants. It would be great to take a day off from the computer! I’d probably catch the bus downtown and window shop. Maybe I could meet some of the girls from the restaurant where I used to work for lunch. For sure, I’d wear one of the sundresses I usually leave in the closet—it’s nice to feel pretty. Then I’d make sure I was home to see that Mark gets his homework in—he needs that scholarship for college next year!
RUSSELL:  I’d sleep in. Hell, yes. Then some coffee, check in on my online games, and head out for some pick up B-ball. I’m really not sure after that. I work a lot of hours, so I don’t have a lot of local friends. I’m not friends with people at work—they frown on management doing that. I’m not dating anyone. So, I’d probably get some takeout Mexican and go home and play online until late. Boring, huh?

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

MARISOL: Wow. Right now, I’d want to hang out with someone like Heather Armstrong—you know, the mommyblogger Dooce? She makes thousands a month from ads on her blog, and that’s wonderful. But she also says what she thinks, and tells it like it is. Sure, she gets a lot of haters, So do I. But I’d love to see how she does it, and just gather a little of her strength by osmosis.
RUSSELL: Robin Williams. No hesitation. I really admire his ability to roll with the punches—to improvise. My whole life, I feel like I’ve been prescribed a path. You know, first go through school, be an athlete and lead a team. Find the right wife to help both of you succeed. Support her in her career like she does you. Have a family. Now my path was supposed to go on in the til death do us part vein, but it fell apart, and I have to admit, I’ve been floundering a little since then. I need to learn how to improvise, how to pick up my path again.
And at least Robin and I would have fun—one 24-hour long party.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

MARISOL:  Perfect happiness? First, I’d have to be in a place where I had a solid income and knew for sure I could take care of myself and my son Mark. Being a single mom most of his life, we had a lot of times when we were right on the edge of having nothing. Honestly, I’d also love to have a good man by my side. It’s been a lonely life so far. One can certainly live without a man….but wouldn’t it be nice to have one?
In relation to that, I’ve established my blog as a moneymaker, and I’m getting more followers all the time, So I really think I’m on the way there!
RUSSELL:  Is there such a thing? I thought I was perfectly happy when I was married, when my sons were born and Tiffy and I were in New York making it. But then the divorce happened. I haven’t been happy since. I mean, sure, I have a good job, and a place to live and all those things—but there’s something missing. God knows I don’t want Tiffy back. But I miss my sons, and she makes it so hard to see them. I get geared up to fight in court, but Tiffy’s dad has 10 times the money I do and they always seem to win. My current state of mind is mostly disappointed. But the high school reunion is coming up—at least my buds and I can relive all our past glories over some beers, right?

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

MARISOL: Patience, maybe? I mean, sure we all need to learn to be patient with others and with ourselves. Sometimes fate doesn’t give us much choice, We have to wait for something to come our way, if it’s not in our control. For those of us who are kind of second-class, we end up waiting for a lot of things. But it sure doesn’t matter if we’re patient or not.
RUSSELL: If you want to get somewhere in life, you’ve got to put modesty in the back seat. No one’s going to promote you, if you don’t promote yourself, and that’s especially true for me as a black man. Toot your own horn, or else you might just get passed by.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

MARISOL:  I have a several-inch scar down the back of my right leg where one of my sisters spilled hot bacon grease on me (by accident) when we were kids,
I eloped with my ex-husband on a wild impulse because I thought he was mad and exciting. But turns out he just needed a woman at home, someone to hang out with and take dancing. Once we had a child, it became a drag for him, and he split.
I am a die-hard fan of 80s music, even as cheesy as it is.
RUSSELL:  I think I’m probably addicted to online MMORPGs. It seems to comprise my whole social life in Ohio, Sure, if I go back to Pennsylvania where I went to school, I’ve got some friends to hang out with, but at home? Not so much,
My favorite food is hot wings.  Not like, SUPER explode your mouth the sun is on fire wings, but Buffalo style, No blue cheese, though. Who wants to eat moldy stuff?
Spring is the best time of year for me. I love when the days start getting warmer, and sunny. It gives my mood a kick in the briefs,  The world just feels like a better place,

What is your ideas of perfect happiness?

“Captaining of my vessel, Devil’s Pearl. She takes me across the sea to buy merchandise like silk and tea from as far as China. We could spend months at sea together. It is a glorious feeling being on the open waters. Storms, pirates, thieves… aye, I love it all..” Nicholas smiled. “Even better are my lassies aboard my vessel.”

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know?

“Lady Isabella captivated me the very first time I saw her. A ray of sunshine to warm my heart. Did ye know that the lass went out into the pond bordering her father’s property in a faulty boat?” Nicholas chuckled. “It took me a moment to realize she couldnae swim. She was deviant and bold, and I couldnae help jumping into the water after her.
“Though she may disagree, I saved my bonnie lass that day, and my waters have never been calmer since.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Finally, all of England thinks I am nae but a brute. But, that’s to be expected as the Sassenachs think all Scots are uncivilized.”

If you could spend a day with someone you admire, who would you pick?”

“My mother. I would sit by her side and hold her hand on the day she died. Tell her that I am well and she nae longer has to worry.”

Meet Heath and Latricia from Courted by Robecca Austin

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Heath looked at his wife and smirked. “I’d say being agreeable is overrated.”
Latricia: “I don’t think being agreeable is overrated.”
Heath: “Of course you don’t, because you’re such a good mediator.” He kissed the back of her hand. “I love that quality about you. But I’d much rather make up with you after a disagreement, knowing that I was honest about how I felt.”
Latricia: “I hate when he’s right. I do appreciate honesty over being agreeable.”

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

Latricia: “I’m perfectly happy right now.”
Heath: “I’d have to agree. See, I can be agreeable.” Heath laughed. “A year ago, I couldn’t imagine falling in love, but Latricia shows me every day that our marriage isn’t what I grew up seeing.”
Latricia: She linked their fingers together. “Our families are close, and I can’t imagine not having everyone in our lives.”

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Latricia:  “We are blessed to be able to spend our days as we wish.”
Heath: “We do make time for each other often and take days off from the office and charity work.”
Latricia: “If I had a do-over, though, it would be our wedding day.”
Heath: “You regret our plane ride to the vineyard?” he teased.
Latricia: “You know what I mean. It would have been nice to have my grandparents and brother at my side.”
Heath: “Baby, I can’t redo that day, but when Shea comes home, and we figure out what’s going on with your brother, I’ll give you the wedding of your dreams.”

Meet the heroines, Bryony, a shifter mermaid, and Maia, a witch

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Bryony: I would spend the day in our pool. It’s my favorite place. Or if I had more time I’d hop on a plane and fly to the coast. I do miss swimming in the sea since we moved to Las Vegas.
Maia: I’d spend the day in the garden by the pool, drinking frozen margaritas and watching my girl Bryony swim in her mermaid shape.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Bryony: I’d choose Caltha Dooran, the leader of the mermen Clans back home – I mean, in the Morvann Islands where I come from. I’ve always admired her courage and spirit. My family didn’t accept my relationship with Maia, it’s the reason why we ran away to Las Vegas. But if I explained how I feel to Caltha, I know she’d understand.
Maia: I’d spend the day with my former mentor and lover, Ariel. He’s a powerful warlock who taught me everything I know about love and magic. But we parted in bad terms – well to be honest I stole a magical amulet from him and ran off with Bryony. I’d like to ask him to forgive me, so we can be friends again. He’s not someone you’d want as an enemy.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

Bryony: I think I had perfect happiness, living with Maia in Las Vegas. I love her to bits, she’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of. But recently I’ve become worried that maybe she’s getting bored with me. I feel she’s hiding something from me.
Maia: My idea of perfect happiness is to live with Bryony, and not have any cares in the world. Unfortunately I can’t stop worrying that Ariel is going to land on our doorstep one day and punish me for stealing from him.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Bryony: Purity and obedience. My family and Clan’s adherence to traditional values have forced me to run away from home, because they couldn’t accept that I was in love with a woman.
Maia: Moderation. I’ve never held back from taking what I want. I knew I wanted Bryony as soon as I set eyes on her. The amulet I stole from Ariel gives good luck to its wearer. I used it to win big in the casino, so I could give Bryony a comfortable life.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

Bryony: I’m a shifter mermaid. I was the first openly gay mermaid on the Morvann islands. I work in a hotel in Las Vegas. I change into my aquatic shape and swim in a tank as part of their “mermaid” show.
Maia: I was born and brought up in France and came to London when I was twenty. I met Ariel, the leader of the London warlocks, who taught me magic and made me the witch I am today. I was in a relationship with him but stole the magical amulet so I could run away with Bryony. I give tarot readings in Las Vegas.

#CharacterInterview :: Meet Charles & Matilda from Melting Matilda - @JudeKnightBooks #RegencyRomance #Romance

Fire smolders under the frost between them.
Can the Ice Maiden Soften the Granite Earl?

Her scandalous birth prevents Matilda Grenford from being fully acceptable to Society, even though she has been a ward of the Duchess of Haverford since she was a few weeks old. Matilda does not expect to be wooed by a worthy gentleman. The only man who has ever interested her gave her an outrageous kiss a year ago and has avoided her ever since.

Can the Granite Earl Melt the Ice Maiden?

Charles, the Earl of Hamner is honour bound to ignore his attraction to Matilda Grenford. She is an innocent and a lady, and in every way worthy of his respect—but she is base-born. His ancestors would rise screaming from their graves if he made her his countess. But he cannot forget the kiss they once shared.

Meet Matilda Grenford from Melting Matilda

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

I would spend the day with dear friends who like me for myself, and who do not judge me worthless because my mother was an Irish actress and the mistress of a duke. Perhaps we would take a picnic into the country somewhere, away from the smoke, odour, and noise of London. It would be summer, of course, on my free day, and sunny. We would walk and talk, laugh together, perhaps sit in the shade and read books. Perhaps cut some flowers or even plant a few seeds. That would be a perfect day.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

How odd. The first person I thought of was the Earl of Hamner. I suppose I do think well of his devotion to his duty and to his mother, and I have nothing to say against his appearance. But admire him? He is pompous and deceitful. He made me think he liked me, and then he proposed to my friend Lady Felicity. I would pick Aunt Eleanor, the Duchess of Haverford, perhaps, who gave me a home as a baby, even though her husband was my father. Or my half-brother, the Marquis of Aldridge, who is a true gentleman, though people do call him a rake.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

True happiness would be a home and family of my own, with a husband who respected and loved me, and the work to do that I am trained for—running a large household, caring for servants and tenants, raising children who will be respected in their turn, giving a helping hand to the poor and unfortunate. Perhaps, after all, I would have been better raised in a working class home, where my birth would not be a constant barrier to the life I was taught to desire. My brother promises that I will always be welcome in his home, but it makes me sad that I am likely to never have a home of my own.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Surely any virtue can become a vice if pushed too far. Courage, for example, can become rashness. Ambition can turn into greed and pride. Our society values detachment and self-discipline, and these are good things in moderation, but taken to excess, as they easily are, they foster hypocrisy. People show you a mask behind which they hide their emotions so that you never know the truth about them.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

I like to garden. At most of my family’s country estates, I have my own area of ground that I have planned, and in which I can potter. Since we seldom stay in one location for longer than a few weeks, I must leave others to care for my gardens in my absence.
When I was little, I used to be afraid of the dark. My nurse must have mentioned it to Aldridge, for Aldridge had a dragon made for me out of fur and cloth, and gave it to me, telling me that it would protect me in the night, and that I could always count on him if I was in danger.
I have always wanted to meet my mother. I feel disloyal to Aunt Eleanor even thinking it, so I have never mentioned it aloud. She went back to Ireland to marry. I wonder if she has had more children? I wonder if she ever thinks about me?

Meet Charles, Earl of Hamner from Melting Matilda

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

My idea day would be spent in the country, at my estate in Gloustershire. If I did not have an obligation to serve my king in the House of Lords, I would never come to London, and I do not much like other big towns and cities, either. Perhaps, if I had a day off with no responsibilities to the tenants or my estates or Parliament, I might take a fishing rod and a picnic down to the river, and spend the day there, especially if I had a compatible friend along.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Not Matilda Grenford. I admire her, I enjoy her company—she is a lady, through and through, despite her antecedents. Intelligent and charming, too. But nothing can come of it. I must marry someone of the proper lineage to be my countess, and I won’t raise expectations I cannot fulfill. Not again. I suppose one of the great political figures of yesteryear. Robert Walpole, perhaps, or Lord Chatham, or even his son, Pitt the Younger, who was the youngest Prime Minister ever. I met him, once, when I first came up to London. I think he would be interesting to talk with.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

True happiness would be a family of my own. At least one son to carry on the family name. A wife who is a true helpmate, looking after my household and the community for which we are responsible, and perhaps hosting the dinners and other entertainments—in the country and in Town—at which so many of the alliances are made on which government depends. I have been actively looking for such a wife, but the only woman I have proposed to me said no, and the woman I dream of is not suitable.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Overrated? How can a virtue be overrated? The virtues are the underpinnings of our society, and it is the lack of them that causes problems.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

When I was young, before I knew what it meant to be an earl, I dreamt of being a poet. I don’t have time for the nonsense now, of course.
A stable hand taught me to whittle when I was boy, and I still like to do so. I find it easy to think when my hands are busy carving little objects.
Sometimes, I think about doing something reckless and outrageous, like driving my curricle too fast, or giving some of the powerful but nasty gossips in Society the cut direct, or kissing Miss Grenford again. But doing so is not consistent with the dignity of the Earl of Hamner.

Meet the lead character in Bovine Tricks, MI6 Agent Tillie Spencer

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Crikey! I’m so bloody busy, I rarely have time for a breather. I suppose I could hop the Tube and take a trip to the eastside of London, maybe pop in on me mum. She worries so about my job, always thinks I am going to wind up dead. But if I’m being truthful, I’d love to spend the day with my love, Abdul, just chilling. Sure, we work together, but alone time is the best! (Winks.)

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

That one is easy! The Queen, of course. A cuppa would be just the thing. She continually asks for me when one of her relative’s goes rogue, but we’ve never met in person. Of course, I’d probably take a tumble when attempting a curtsy, but just seeing her sweet smile, her gracious demeanor, would mean the world to me. I would be gobsmacked if she rang me and requested my presence at tea.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

1. My favorite color is purple.
2. I am trying to master Arab cuisine. Abdul wants hummus, he wants Fattoush, he wants Mansaf. Arrrgh. Fish and chips are so much easier. He says that’s bland.
3. If I marry Abdul, I will be an Arab princess.

Blurb for Space Cowboy Blues:

Join in for a chat with the hero, Josh Reynolds, space cowboy, and the heroine, Melynas, an alien from the blue planet Albastra.

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

Josh: I would saddle my horse and ride towards the sunset… I love exploring new landscapes. The prairie on Planet 2215, Albastra, reminds me of the ranch back home. Apart from the blue color of the grass.
Melynas: I’d go for a walk in the old city, where my ancestors used to live. It’s uninhabited now, but still beautiful. I love to explore its streets and discover new buildings. They still glow at night, like towers of luminous glass.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

Josh: Neil Eriksson, the first human to circumnavigate the Milky Way. Like him I’d love to leave my mark on the world, do something that no one has done before.
Melynas: One of the kings of old who used to rule this land. I’d ask them how the city works, what makes the buildings glow. So we could maintain the city as it should be, and one day perhaps move back into it.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

Josh: I thought perfect happiness was to be free, to roam from planet to planet. I’m a space cowboy. On each planet, I examine the animals that might be used like cattle or horses, take pictures and samples for the science boffins back on Earth, pocket my fee… then I’m off. To the next job… the next planet… But now, on Albastra, I’m beginning to think that maybe happiness is to find a place that I can call home. With a woman at my side, that I can call wife.
Melynas: To live a good life, in my community, with a man at my side, that would be perfect happiness for me. But all the boys and young men leave the planet, because there are no jobs for them here. I wish I could find a way to restore my people’s prosperity, so the men would not have to leave. And I could find a partner, love and be loved…

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Josh: Confidence. On Albastra too many settlers from Earth are over-confident, arrogant even. They don’t treat the locals as equals, and don’t make any effort to learn about their new world or adapt to it. They just expect it to adapt to them.
Melynas: Independence. I have to be independent – I have little choice as I am on my own and have to support myself by working for the settlers from Earth. But we are nothing on our own. My ancestors built a wonderful civilisation, because they worked together. I would like to be part of a community again. A family.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that the readers do not know about.

Josh: I grew up on a ranch. I learned to ride before I could walk. I think I can form a bond very quickly with any animal… I charm the hunoowins, the blue unicorns of Albastra, with some dried apples. I’m very polite, even to robots. Well, some of them are smarter than me!
Melynas: I have blue skin and green hair. I work as a guide for the human settlers from Earth, one of my jobs is to welcome new arrivals and show them around the Dome, the protected area where Earth people live. Albastra, my planet, is riddled with micro organisms that are deadly to humans, but the Dome is a sterile place. Inside the Dome humans can move freely, but when I go in, I have to be thoroughly disinfected and wear protective gear, otherwise I might infect a human. I’m afraid of some of the settlers. When they look at me with their hard and greedy eyes, I’m glad that they can’t touch me. But Josh is different.

Character Interview with Jim Borden from Arresting Jeremiah

If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

I’d spend the day in bed with my fiancée, Calista. I can’t get enough of her. The relationship is new, but I doubt I’ll ever stop wanting her as much as I do. If lounging in bed—rather, working up a sweat—isn’t an option, I’d be just as happy going to the movies or doing something fun with Calista and her daughter, Lacey. Lace is a smart kid, and I wish I could call her my own, but I’m determined to be the best father figure she could ever want.

If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living or dead or imaginary), who would you pick?

My dad. Two years ago, a drunk driver hit my mom’s minivan, and my parents died on impact. My sister, Mia, and I were riding in the back. We both suffered concussions, and I broke my arm, but at least we survived. Losing my parents was tough, and I’m grateful I can’t remember the crash. My mind has blocked the memories.
Anyway, I’ve always looked up to my dad. He was a police sergeant and wanted me to follow in his footsteps. I wanted to make him proud, so I became a parole officer with plans to later join the Denver PD. After losing my folks and breaking my arm a second time, I finally decided law enforcement wasn’t right for me. I’d like to explain that to Dad since I never had the chance to tell him when he was alive. I think he would be proud of the man I am now, but he’d probably shake his head in how I got to be that man. I guess I’ll never know.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? And, what is your current state of mind?

For the first time in a while, I’m truly happy. Calista is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Before her, I was foolish and blinded by my anger. I wanted to find the person who wronged me, who nearly got me and my sister killed, and I was heading down a dark path that could’ve ended with a bullet in my brain. When I think back on what I did, I shudder. How was I that stupid? Now, everything is kosher. I’m able laugh and have fun with my loved ones, and I’m able to sleep at night, unless I’m playing with Calista. My life is back on track, and it’s gonna stay that way.

What do you consider to be the most overrated virtue and why?

Hmm…courage and stupidity is often the same thing. It’s good to have, but sometimes it leads you to make mistakes.
Let me tell you about this guy I know. He’s doing bad things for the greater good, which takes a lot of guts. He’s a criminal, and I hated him at first, but then he helped Calista and me out of a jam. I did some illegal things for good reasons, too, but I wasn’t trying to help anyone but myself. Unlike this criminal. He’s trying to set right some heavy wrongs—his heart is in the right place—but is he really making a difference long-term? Or will all the crap he’s doing negate the good later on?

Tell us something about yourself that the readers do not know about.

I love to play games, especially old board games and video games. I still have some from when I was a kid. Calista thinks the graphics are bad on the gaming console, which they are, but she enjoys it. Mia comes over sometimes, and we have tournaments. I usually win, but she always puts up a good fight.

Read an Excerpt from Arresting Jeremiah

He hated to upset Calista all over again, but he had to know. “What were you thinking when you tried on the necklace?”

Air whizzed through her teeth. Silence stretched between them as they walked toward the diner. She sighed, her voice soft. “No offense, but I don’t know or trust you enough to let you in that much. I’ve made some mistakes—things I don’t want to talk about. Give me some time.”

Trust? He couldn’t blame her for that. If he demanded to know her secrets, he had to tear down the barbwire he’d erected around his.

No. That couldn’t happen. His life depended on his silence. Did her private thoughts and memories hinge on life and death too? His stomach twisted. Nothing bad would happen to her, not if he was around to stop it.

“What can you tell me?” Hell, only an asshole would ask something like that without opening up in return.

“The necklace reminded me of something I once wanted more than anything. Not the pearls itself, but what it represented. I couldn’t have it because I wasn’t good enough.” She pulled from his grasp and wrapped her arms around her middle.

“I’m sorry I forced you to try on the necklace. I thought you liked it. All women deserve something that makes them feel pretty.” The stench of oil filled his nose and he sneezed. He glanced at the noisy passing cars and pulled Calista farther back along the sidewalk, away from a puddle in the road, before a vehicle splashed them. “I understand about lack of trust and the need for secrecy. I hope someday you can tell me what happened, but I do know one thing, even if you never tell me. You were good enough. You always have been and will always be.”

Her blue-green eyes widened. She traced her fingertips over his smooth jaw, leaving sparks in her wake.

“You’re so kind. I almost believe it when you say it. God, I wish I’d met you years ago, Jeremiah.”

“Why do you call me Jeremiah? Everyone else calls me Jim.”

“It feels more personal, as though you belong only to me. I may have to share Jim with the rest of the world, but Jeremiah—the strong, kind man I’ve admired over the past several months—is all mine.”

Her admission branded him like a fire poker to his skin. If he were alone, he’d beat his chest and roar. No woman had ever wanted to claim him. No one but her ever called him Jeremiah.

He coughed, clearing his throat. “Friday is only two days away, but I can’t wait that long. Let’s get in my car and go to a park, somewhere private, to talk.”

“Talk? Is that code for necking like teenagers?”

“I’m game if you are, but I don’t want to be rushed. We’ll have time for kissing and touching later.”

She pecked his cheek. “We better go before the rain starts again.”

He grasped her hand and they hurried back to the diner.
