#SpecialFeature :: Meet the Characters from Awakening Foster Kelly by Cara R.Olsen

Now Presenting:
*** SPECIAL FEATURE - September'13 ***

If only a pile of wayward curls and the inability to stay on her feet were seventeen year-old Foster Kelly’s most pressing concerns. Unfortunately, stubborn hair and clumsiness are just the tip of it. At the age of five when Foster is told, “You don’t belong here,” it was only a mistake, but the result is one broken heart. These four carelessly spoken words have shaped and shadowed Foster, and now—a senior at Shorecliffs High-school—she seeks the wallflower’s existence, denying herself the most casual of friendships, much too afraid that someone will see what she believes is certain: she does not belong anywhere—or with anyone.

This reality would continue to suit her just fine; however . . . Love has a long-standing history of undoing broken hearts.

Like a comet, an unexpected arrival knocks Foster out of the crowded, starry sky, sending her directly into the limelight. Exposed and afraid, she will attempt to regain anonymity; but it isn’t so easy now that someone is watching. He pursues this shy enigma, confronting Foster’s deepest fears head-on, and in the process falls wholly and completely in love with her. But there is something he is not saying . . . a secret capable of certain ruin. Either he will break her heart once and for all, or he will heal it.
In the end, though, it is Foster who must decide if she is worth mending.

1. What are the 3 things that you would carry to the deserted island?

Foster:
1) Suncreen - The largest bottle I could find.
2) The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
3) Socks - I'm not such a fan of sand. It gets everywhere, and I suspect becomes rather hot to walk on midday.

Emily:
First of all, I'm a really strong swimmer, so unless this island is super remote, I'm finding my way back to the mainland. But, okay. I would take my bathing suit, surfboard, and strawberry Chapstick.

Jake:
Wait. Are we trapped there? Or is this like some kind of retreat? Um . . . is Em gonna be there? She probably said she's bringing her board, so yeah I'd bring mine, too, so we have something to do. A HUGE bag of Cheetos. And Maddie. Crap. I should have said her first. Hey, can I change the order?

Dominic:
My guitar. Rope to build a hut. Matches.

2. Who is your celebrity crush?

Foster:
*blushing profusely* Oh, I . . .  I don't have one. . . . sorry.

Emily:
Tom Hanks - but that would be way creepy if I had a crush on him, because the dude could be my dad and then some. Ew, no. He's a really good actor - my favorite movie of his is Big.  And, I don't know, he seems like an all-around rad guy.

Jake:
Is Maddie going to read this answer? Because if she is, then I don't have one. No, wait, she would never believe that. Okay . . . um, I guess . . . Rachel McAdams.

Dominic:
Next question, please.

3. According to you what are the top 3 world destinations?

Foster:
Oh, gosh, this is tough. I would love to travel some day, perhaps even backpack through Europe. I would need a guide, though, and very good hiking boots. After high school I'll be studying abroad in South Korea. I've been communicating for over a year now with the head of the Lingh Si Orphanage. They're located in a fairly mountainous, isolated region of the country; the climate is somewhat rainy in the winter, which makes sending for supplies and help difficult. I can't wait to meet the children. I have their pictures on desk. They're beautiful. I'm sorry - what was the question? Oh, right, my three top destinations, this is tough . . .
1) Istanbul
2) Caracuaro
3) The Netherlands

Emily:
Okinawa, Japan
Vancouver Island, Canada
Rincon, Puerto Rico
These are the top rated surfing locales in the world. I've surfed both Japan and Puerto Rico, but haven't made it up to Canada yet. Next year I'll surf the World Tour - I'm hoping the qualifying season will someplace I haven't been.

Jake:
I'd say probably Mexico, so I could eat some legit Mexican food. Figi, for sure. Place is gorgeous. And . . . I don't know, maybe Paris? Mads thinks I could use some culturing. And Italian food sounds good, right? I could eat pizza for dayzzz.

Dominic:
Egypt, to see the pyramids, and whatever else I might dig up. (That was supposed to be joke.) Greece. I'm half Greek, and we have relatives that live near Elafonissi. Aspen might be cool, too. I snowboard.

4. What is your one guilty pleasure?

Foster:
Guilty pleasure? Goodness, I'm not sure, to be honest. I love to read, though. On more than one occasion, I've spent the entire day on my balcony with Rhoda, lost in a long book. Usually my mother or father has to come in and remind me I haven't eaten.

Emily:
Pedicures. But I don't feel guilty about it. I don't like shoes, or socks, and my feet are constantly getting torn up from rocks and whatever else I step on when I'm at the beach.

Jake:
Okay, well . . . chick-flicks. But wait, listen. Cuz Mads loves them, and it means I get to cuddle with her while she's all emotional and stuff. And afterwards she's like extra affectionate, and yeah, I'm not complaining about that. I guess I'm not ashamed of it or whatever. I mean, c'mon, does Nicholas Sparks make a bad movie? Am I right, people?

Dominic:
Concerts. Usually I'll go see a band play at least every month, if not twice a month. As far as music goes, there's isn't really anything I won't listen to. All music has a purpose. But I love Dave Matthews. The guy's a genius on the guitar.
