#BlogTour & #GuestPost :: Eternal Dreams: The Curse of Memories by Christopher Compton

Eternal Dreams is a fiction fantasy tale about six teenage friends who escape into a dream world to hide away from the horrors of their own lives, only to find that reality is catching up to them anyway. Drephoria, the name of the stunning dream world created from their collective minds, will test the limits of their friendship, break the balance between good and evil and prove the true value of memories and the imagination.
The first book in the trilogy, "The Curse of Memories," focuses on the central character Kail and his dark past, told through memories, while simultaneously introducing the rest of his friends (known as The Inseparable Six) and the other strange and deadly inhabitants of Drephoria. Pitted against the dark queen Malise and her legendary allies known as The Forgotten Four, Kail and his friends must rid their world of evil before they lose themselves forever. Nostalgic, thrilling, heart-breaking, and consistently memorable, Eternal Dreams is a fantasy at its finest.

Dreams: The Ultimate Fantasy

When most people think of books that define the fantasy genre, they think Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and more recently, Song of Fire and Ice. They think of stories that have kings and queens, magical objects, quests and the like. Obviously they are not wrong; those are very much staples of the genre as it is defined. Fantasy worlds are meant to mirror our own with significant differences that set them apart from reality. I think that was the biggest problem when I was pitching around Eternal Dreams: The Curse of Memories to literary agents and publishers. When I told them it was a fantasy novel, they asked for details of the magic system, the backstory of the land and its people etc. I didn’t have any of that. My fantasy didn’t exist in another world or another time. It existed in people’s minds.

So the book is a fantasy story, but it’s in modern times, centering on suburban teenagers that don’t possess any powers other than their own imaginations. Some people may think that it doesn’t sound like anything exceptional, but to me that’s exactly what I want. I want readers to believe that it doesn’t take a special initiation or extraordinary birth in a different place or different time to have something incredible happen in their lives.  It can happen to anyone, here and now. Eternal Dreams is all about the wonderful and impossible happening to normal people.

I think dreams are the closest things we have to true fantasies. In our world, there is no magic, no dragons, no giant wars to be fought with sword and shield. But we do have dreams, which have the ability to bring the wildest of imaginings to life, at least in our minds.  Fantasies are born within the mind. To me, that was the perfect playground to explore for the Eternal Dreams Trilogy. The characters can do anything, be anyone, and experience everything. Every day-dream they’ve ever had, every wish they’ve ever wanted to come true, can become reality. If that isn’t the purest form of fantasy, I don’t know what is.
