#BookReview :: A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas

A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beast with faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

I have been a fan of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass Series from the very beginning. I also enjoy reading the retellings of fairy tales and classics. So, when I heard that she is writing a new series – a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I knew I had to get my hands on this one as soon as possible.

Feyre, is the youngest in the family with two elder sisters and a father. She is pretty much responsible for her family’s survival. She had learnt to hunt at a very young age to sustain herself and her family after a misfortune had befallen on their family. When she kills a wolf in the woods to be able to bring back a deer home, it was her survival instinct that guided her. Little did she know that she would have to pay for it with her life in exchange! But the beast offered her a choice – either she could pay with her life or she could go and live with him on his lands… But there is something sinister going on in their lands that Feyre is unaware of at first. When she finds out about the curse, will she fight for her captor and her land? All will her mortal life be of little value?

Right off the bat, I have to say that Sarah J. Maas has produced another kickass heroine. Feyre is a strong and caring girl who would do anything to save those close to her heart. At times I could not help but compare her with Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games series, what with her looking after her family and her hunting skills. But Feyre has something over Katniss that makes it easy to love her. Then there is Tamlin, who makes for a very lovable beast too. I enjoyed getting to know Tamlin though his character was a bit predictable over others. Three other characters stood out in this book. First is Tamlin’s friend Lucien who I slowly grew to like. And then there is Rhysand, the High Lord of the night court who I somehow liked from the very beginning. I simply knew there was more to this character. Nesta, Feyre’s sister, is the one who surprised me the most. I almost hated her at the beginning and was sure that she wouldn’t have much of a role to play. But I absolutely enjoyed the experience that Nesta brings into the story.

The story has been well plotted and narrated. But I have to admit that there were moments when I felt disappointed. Once there was the sense of Déjà vu as the book reminded me of Bella from Twilight series and I didn’t like that part. Also, there was a moment where Tamlin behaved like a typical chauvinistic pig and Feyre just took it - another Twilight déjà vu moment that I simply did not like. I am taking away a star from my rating for this. But the world that Sarah J. Maas has built is almost as interesting as the world of Throne of Glass.

Overall, an entertaining read that I finished in one sitting.
