On a Night Like This (Callaways #1)
The second oldest of the Callaway clan, Aiden Callaway veered from the family tradition of urban firefighting and became a smokejumper, never questioning his choice until the job took the life of his friend, Kyle, and left Aiden with injuries and fractured memories. Everyone blames Aiden for what happened, but he doesn't remember, nor is he sure he wants to remember. The truth may clear Aiden of blame but destroy Kyle's reputation and hurt the people he left behind.

Aiden seeks help from an unlikely partner…

Sara had always been untouchable, sweet, innocent, his sister's best friend, and the girl next door. But one reckless night in their youth took their relationship to a new level. Sara has never forgiven or forgotten the way Aiden brought it crashing down, but she's no longer that girl with the crazy crush. She's a woman in search of her own truth. The sparks between Aiden and Sara have been smoldering for a very long time. Sara is afraid to take another chance on a man who broke her heart, and Aiden knows better than anyone how dangerous an intense fire can be. As teenagers they weren’t ready for each other. Are they now?

My Review:

Aiden Callaway comes from a long line of firefighters, but instead of going into the traditional firefighting business, Aiden is a smokejumper. With his best friend by his side, Aiden had a pretty good life until Kyle got killed in a fire. Unable to explain the events, Aiden lets everyone think that he is to be blamed for his friend’s death – including himself. Plagued by nightmares of the fateful day and on the verge of losing his career, Aiden feels trapped and alone.

Sara Davidson is the nerdy girl next door and also his sister friend to Aiden. Sara has her own demons to fight as she tries to connect with her dad who has always been aloof and disapproving. Sara had her mother to act as a buffer, but with her death, Sara’s father is the only family she has got left. On a trip back to her home, she reconnects with Aiden – her teenage crush. But after being burned by him once, Sara is determined not let Aiden Callaway close to her heart again. When a family secret is revealed, Sara has only Aiden by her side to keep her going.

Will these two souls find their happily ever after with each other or will they just end up nursing broken hearts all over again?

Sara Davidson is a strong woman with a good heart. She was left unwanted by her father first and then Aiden. But she put it all behind her and made a life for herself in New York. She is on the fast track to being made a partner in the law firm she works at. She is really a well-rounded and balanced character. Aiden is hot, charming when he wants to be and has a heart to match his looks. Together their chemistry is undeniable and that is what keeps the plot moving. The sub-plot of Kyle’s death adds a twist of mystery to the plot. While I was happy with the way Sara and Aiden’s relationship developed, I couldn’t keep my mind off the mystery Kyle’s death. At first the book felt a bit slow because the author had to introduce all of the Callaways to her readers. But trust me… The Callaways are people you would love to get to know. So, it wasn’t really tedious, instead it made me curious and eager about the stories about some of the other members of the clan.

A good romance with a hint of mystery – what else can one ask for in a novel that entertains you for a couple of hours.
