The Ruby Iyer Diaries ( Ruby Iyer #0.5)

This novelette is a companion book to The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer. A peek into the soul of an angry, young girl, who will come of age in a city on the verge of total annihilation. Ruby kept a diary from the age of ten till she ran away from home at sixteen. It is from here that I picked out a few diary entries for The Ruby Iyer Diaries. This short series of vignettes from Ruby's life, tells you more a little more about the origins of Ruby Iyer.

The Ruby Iyer Diaries (Dystopian Romance, Coming of Age, Ruby Iyer Series, #0.5)

I never intended to publish Ruby’s Diaries. I started writing it to get into Ruby’s mind and understanding what drives her. As the pages flowed, I realised I wanted to share her diaries with the world so readers too could understand the events of her formative years;  how they changed her and made her the angry young girl she turned out to be.

As a ‘grown up’ and I use that term loosely, I am always conscious of how my growing years made me, marred me, scarred me. No I didn’t have a particularly traumatic childhood not in comparison to the horrors many children around the world undergo; but perhaps it was/is because I was an over-sensitive child I felt everything keenly, too keenly. Took everything to heart, and yet never wanted to accept the status quo as a given. I wanted to rebel, but didn’t know how to break out of that which was imposed on me.

So as I grew up and travelled the world it sunk in somewhere that how much ever I rejected my past and my roots, I was a product of my upbringing. My environment, my geography, and the society I grew up in. I carried that conditioning deep inside and even though the ‘conscious’ self wanted to break out, my unconscious self always held/ holds me back.

I realised I was going to spend the rest of my adult life unlearning everything I had been taught growing up.

And so this always has fascinated me – how we become what we are exposed to as kids, like it or not.
So I had to write Ruby’s Diaries to understand for myself how her childhood had impacted her. And the truth when I uncovered it was shocking. It’s not something I could reveal in the early drafts, not till the final re-edit of the latest version of both the Diaries and Many Lives that is out now. It was that crucial piece of her I had missed when I first wrote Many Lives.

For the truth of why we act the way we do now, often has its seeds in our growing years. And we do many times cover those incident(s) or emotions; bury them so deep that they don’t reveal themselves, not unless we lower our conscious mind.

It is this that led me to writing The FIRST LIFE OF VIKRAM ROY, so I could understand what makes Vikram what he is now—this mysterious, brooding, cop, who thinks he is quite boring, but is actually quite alluring, both to other boys and girls.

It’s why I will also write PANKY’S FIRST LIFE. Couldn’t have been easy for him, growing up as gay kid in Bombay right?

The Ruby Iyer Diaries is consciously short at 10,000 words. I know many readers want more. But you know me by now. I really don’t like to give away everything. If I did what fun would that be right? Heheh.
