#BookReview :: Let Me Go by Shriram Iyer

When Anshuman Kale first meets Indira Kelkar, all it takes to bring them close is a lost school bag, a missed school bus leading to a walk back home, and a few cutlets to beat the after-school hunger. As the now best friends grow up together, there is nothing that can come between their friendship.
Or so they think !
At the climax of their teenage years, as Indira falls in love with a guy five years older, she finds herself caught between friendship and love - neither of which she can let go.
But as their lives begin to take a turn - for good, for bad, and for the worse - An Anshuman is forced to rethink one of the things he had consinsidered a given: he and Indira would be best friends forever.
Now estranged for years, Anshuman is looking forward to marrying the love of his life, while Indira is waiting to hear back on her euthanasia appeal. What could have gone so wrong that she wants to end her life ? As their lives intersect once again, how far will Anshuman for for Indira ?

Book Blurbs are supposed to give you a glimpse into what a book has to offer. It often helps bookworms decide whether they would like to pick up the book or not. In some cases, a book is so much more than its blurb and this is one such book… The blurb definitely doesn’t do it justice. I say this because when I read the blurb, I thought this would be another typical love story where two friends do not realize they are in love with each other till it is too late. But no, that is not what this book is about.

The story starts with Anshuman, well set in his life, looking forward to marrying Alisha, the ‘love of his life’. He is ready to start a new chapter in his life, when past comes calling. Indira, a girl he thought he would be friends for life with, is waiting to hear back on her euthanasia appeal. Dropping everything, Anshuman decides to return to India and to his friend. Alisha, who is taken aback by his sudden decision, follows him to try and discover what he is up to and walked straight into his past.

The book has three great hooks for its readers: plot, narrative and relationship dynamics. The plot may feel very simple and straight forward, but it has a lot to offer to its readers. There are some very cliched moments in the book, yet they somehow all felt like bittersweet moments rather than eye-rolling, ‘same-old-stuff’ moments. That actually made me realize how good the author is with his execution of the story. High on drama, the book really is a roller coaster journey with a lot of highs and lows. It touched all the right chords with me. The characters of the two protagonists are well developed given that the story spans over more than two decades of their lives. Anshuman and Indira will win your heart as individuals and with their relationship dynamic. The author has handled the secondary characters with equal importance. So, do not be surprised if a certain secondary character makes their place in your heart along with Anshuman and Indira.

I really enjoyed this book. I cannot think of a single book that I can draw parallels with this one… It is unique in its style of execution.
