Interview with Yajna Ramnath

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?

It was the Winter of 2010 when I was so annoyed with my life. I wanted to recreate it and the only way I knew how, was to write. I started my story which everyone now knows as Tainted Blood. Yeah, I wanted to be a badass vampire who took no prisoners. It was euphoric having to disappear into a world where you could be anything you wanted to be, no judgment. No rules.

What inspires you to write?

Life in general. It is my escape. My solitude. If I’m having a bad day, I purge it into a kickass scene (usually involving blood and murder). If I’m feeling positively happy, I purge it into a romantic scene (usually involving some r-rated scenes). If I see someone going through something and I know I can’t help, I write about it and give it my own happy-ending.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?

It was a combination of two things. 1. My best friend and I were talking about how we wished we could get back at everyone that ever hurt us romantically without remorse. 2. I was tired of people judging me for my dark thoughts and emotionless demeanor, so Mackenna was born. She’s karma personified. I wanted to write a story about how actions could sometimes lead to deadly consequences. In fact, it is the main theme for my Dangerous Games series.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?

Oh, there are piles of notebooks with so many stories that are sitting in my bookcase. Some, I’m just not ready to tell. Others, I’ll eventually let them out to play.

Tell us about your writing process.

My writing process involves a lot of lollipops, color pens, sticky-notes and ripped pages. Although I write out my storyline, very rarely does my story end up exactly like that.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

I hope it’s not a spoiler, if it is, apologies. It’s the wedding scene. That entire chapter just solidifies why I wrote the book, which would make sense once people read the book and then the second book. There is a defining moment towards the end of Kenna’s chapter and of course, Elias finally realizes his purpose. So for me, the wedding scene is my favorite, especially considering I hadn’t planned for there to be any wedding.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?

Kenna’s lack of emotion comes from my personality. I find it hard to react emotionally to anything. Sometimes I’m able to fake it for those that need it, but emotions are not something I’m good at. Although, I did inherit one of Kenna’s bad habits which I’m trying to get rid off.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I walk around my room in the dark, turn up my music loud and act out my scenes or dialogues out loud to see if they make sense.

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?

I love reading (39 out of 150 for my reading challenge this year). My favorite authors include Chloe Neill, Aleatha Romig, Tarryn Fisher, K. Webster and of course, Colleen Hoover. I love their ability to write whatever story it is they want to tell. Irrespective of what the reception is, they write the dark, the gritty, the romantic, the lighthearted, the mysterious… practically anything and they are proud of it. It’s what I tried to do with Third Wheel, was write without worry of the reception of the book and whether people thought I was slightly unhinged.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, till date?

To keep writing and to stay true to myself.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write for you. There are always going to be a handful that accept your genre and a handful that hate it. So write the story you’re dying to tell. Afterall, you have to live with what you put out.

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?

I’ve thought about this many times. Alexandra Daddario as Kenna, Emeruade Tobia as Hennessey. Chace Crawford as Elias.

If you were to be stranded on the famous deserted island, what three things would you carry?

Notebook. Pen. My favorite pillow.

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?

All my free time is spent reading. I’m a hermit and prefer being curled up in my bed with a book.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

Bungee Jumping, because I’m kinda sorta terrified of extreme heights.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

1. I love make-up, I won’t go anywhere without it
2. Cheesecake is life
3. I have a weird obsession with balloons

What do you have in store next for your readers?

The Third Wheel is followed up by A Man Scorned. I plan to take my readers on an emotional and dark journey. There are times while writing where I’m shocked at the outcome of the scene, so I can only imagine what it’d do to them.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?

I just wanna thank them for every word of mine that they read. Without you, I would be writing these stories in a diary that never saw the light of day.

ʟᴏᴠᴇ is a dangerous word.

As much as it has ended battles, it has started wars.

As much as it has healed pain, it has caused agony.

As much as it has ended hate, it has created loathing.

I fell in love. A kind of love that I would live and die for. A kind of love that I would forsake who I was to obtain it. I was one of the believers until I wasn’t anymore.

I trusted too easily, I fell too quickly, and I loved… oh, I loved too deeply.
However, there was one thing I was excellent at…

𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦.

Was I insane? Sure. Borderline psychopathic, when I didn’t take my meds.

But it was okay…

They liked me that way.

I smiled as I watched them hand in hand wondering what was going to happen next.

They think it’s over.

I laughed.

They think there's a sense of remorse within me.

I laughed harder.

Game on.
