Interview with the Lyndi Alexander

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
My journey to writing began as so many do, in a love of reading. My mother taught me to read when I was three years old, and I devoured everything I could get my hands on. We didn’t have a lot of books in our home, because she was a single mother and money was often tight, but I read the Bible, enjoying all the drama of the Old Testament, and whatever else we had, until I started reading Dr. Spock’s baby wellness book and self-diagnosing with all sorts of horrid maladies. Then we got a library card. 😊

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?
A couple of things. I suffer with chronic pain, so I’ve tried a number of massage and other holistic therapies. I’ve also taken an energy healing course, and have experienced the wonders of what recognizing energies can do. Second, I was a newspaper journalist as a young woman, so I’ve lived the up-and-down life of a reporter. Often we get to see the worst in people—so take energy studies gone dark, murder, and a vulnerable young reporter, add them up, and presto!

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?
Yes. And they’ll stay there. LOL. Definitely some pieces I wrote before I learned the craft.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?
I love the scene when Sara finally realizes why she can channel energy as she does. It’s a revelation to her, a memory she’s blocked, and it’s happy and sad and has all the feels, really.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?
Absolutely. I do that with most of my characters, actually. A bit of split personality, sharing a quirk or two with each of my heroes/heroines. Sara Woods has my curiosity and tenaciousness when getting to the bottom of something.

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?
I love Anne McCaffrey’s dragon books. She’s a wonderful example of how to take a disenfranchised character and show their growth into someone who is strong and able to take control of their life at last.
I also like Stephen King, who shows that you don’t have to be inherently evil to do bad things—ordinary people can do the worst things.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Write.
No, really, it’s that simple. You can read all the advice about building a platform, making a brand, getting on all the social media, etc., but until you get into the craft and perfect your work, none of the rest will matter. I mean, how can you sell a book until you’ve written, edited, loved, hated and polished it?

What would be the Dream Cast for your book if it was to be turned into a movie?
Interesting question. For Sara Woods, Nina Dobrev. For Dr. Rick Paulsen, Clancy Brown. inlice officer Brendon Zale, perhaps Adam Driver? Or Patrick Flueger?  Editor Gloria Wilson would be the late, great Eileen Brennan. And Dr. Ruprei from the Goldstone clinic… that would have to be Piper Laurie, in her Carrie-mom mode.

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?
I’ve retired to a lovely little mobile home in Asheville NC, with a screened in porch that faces the woods, with a view of the Blue Ridge in the distance. I just love to sit with my kitties and smell the pine air, enjoying nature at its best.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.
- I foster cats and kittens from the local shelters and rescue groups, helping prepare them for forever homes.
- I once got involved in a shootout at a house we were moving into in South Florida.
- When I was a news reporter, I got to fly the F-16 simulator for a story. Took me about 30 seconds to totally crash and burn a 7 million dollar machine. Ooops.

What do you have in store next for your readers?
Writing as my alter ego, Alana Lorens, I have TENDER MISDEMEANORS, a romantic suspense novel coming from the Wild Rose Press any day now. I love this one—it’s got danger and love and white supremacists and Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs and an iguana to save the day.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
I invite them to check out my sci-fi/fantasy books by Lyndi Alexander and my romance/suspense books as Alana Lorens. I don’t write to formula—I write what inspires me, which is why I’ve got topics and characters from A-Z and a couple beyond that! Thanks for reading!

About the Book:
Running away isn’t necessarily the answer.

In her mad rush to escape a failed marriage, Sara Woods takes the first job available and lands in the middle of a mystery. Her first assignment as a news reporter for the Ralston Courier is the investigation of a string of deaths, all young women, all her age.

She becomes a patient at the Goldstone Clinic, a local mecca of healing, to deal with chronic pain from her past. But all is not as it seems at the Goldstone, its doctors and nurses are all the picture of perfect beauty and health. Patients at the clinic first seem to get better, then they deteriorate. Sara enlists the help of Dr. Rick Paulsen, who teaches her how to access her internal power, skills she never knew she had, revealing secrets from her past. Police officer Brendon Zale also takes an interest in Sara, but he acts like a stalker, watching her every move, and he won't leave her alone.

As she digs deeper into the story, and more young women die without explanation, she tries to choose allies wisely, but not till the last confrontation does she discover the identity of her true enemy.

By then, it’s too late.
