Aditi is a modern girl working in Delhi brought up in a sheltered atmosphere with high traditional family values.

Rahul is a free thinker with no regard or patience for archaic social norms.

Will Rahul be able to break the barrier of Aditi’s social conditioning? Will he go to any length to convince her of his philosophy?

Can Aditi hope to make Rahul believe in happily-ever-after? Will she risk losing her independence for a person who cannot give her any emotional security?

Rahul waited for her, studying the wide expanse of the clear sand beach from the window. He had to tread carefully. She was not like the other girls in his circle who knew the rules of the game. But he had surprised himself. Under normal circumstances, he would have steered clear of girls like Aditi—simple, emotional, sheltered. But she had somehow breached the uncaring wall around his heart. A wall that he had ruthlessly erected when he had been made aware of his background in the boarding school and later during his college years.

He was courting trouble here but was helpless to stop the chain of events from unfolding, including his own attachment to her. She had crawled into his soul like no one else had before.

“I’m ready.”

He turned to find her face scrubbed clean and hair in a ponytail. It irritated him. What was she playing at? He had told her once that he liked her hair open. It seemed she was deliberately trying to make herself unattractive to him. Why? Did she want to back out? Well, he’d be damned if he allowed that!

Masking his ugly mood with a smile, he gestured towards the door. He caught hold of her hand while walking towards the restaurant and felt her stiffen and resist, but he didn’t let her go. She’d better get used to him.

At the restaurant, she refused to meet his eyes and spoke in monosyllables. Where necessary, she’d meet his eyes but dropped her gaze either to her plate or her surroundings the next second. After half an hour of the visual I-spy, he snapped.

“What’s the problem, Aditi? Have I suddenly turned into an ogre or something?”

“What?! What are you talking about?”

He touched her hand on the table but she pulled it back.

“This. This is what I am talking about. Shrinking back. Trembling as if I’m going to hurt you or… worse, rape you. Don’t you know me? Don’t you trust me?” He took a deep breath when she sat there staring at the table cutting a guilty figure. That submissive pose added fuel to his anger, but he controlled himself. “It’s okay. Everyone’s allowed to have second thoughts. You don’t want me, it’s fine. I can take it. Pushing myself on someone who doesn’t want me is not my style. But you would be lying to yourself if you think we don’t have something special going on.”

She sighed but still didn’t look up.

He stood up, then something else occurred to him. “Wait a minute. Did you think we could play down this attraction between us? Or did you plan to pretend it doesn’t exist to avoid the risks? Or do you still think I’m a two-timing prick and you don’t trust me?”

“You know it’s not like this,” she snapped. “I have taken the risk of coming with you, haven’t I?”

“Yes, of course, you have…” he snapped back, then shook his head and added in an even tone, “Be ready in an hour.”

As he took the cobbled path back to his room, he was glad she had recovered enough from her victim state to answer back. He didn’t want to spoil her trip, just because she couldn’t reciprocate his feelings. He had thought they had something deeper going between them—something special—but obviously, they were not on the same wavelength.
