Interview with Author Kristy Brown

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?

I knew as a child that I loved English class and would write stories at home. I trained as an actress, but after having my first child, I started writing again whilst he slept. My first book, KIERA’S QUEST, a middle grade/ tween fantasy series, came from a short story which just kept growing.

What inspires you to write?

Everything! I feel at my most content when writing. My children inspire me, a piece of art or a favourite song, can often trigger an idea.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?

My current story is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet, but I haven’t really written anything since lockdown as I can’t seem to concentrate.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?

I always finish what I start, I’m a little O.C.D that way, but I do have at least ten new story ideas ready to go.

Tell us about your writing process.

I need complete silence, another reason why I haven’t written since lockdown due to both my boys being at home. I usually write a scruffy pen version of a chapter, then go onto type it up, re-editing as I go.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

As I haven’t finished my new story, I’ll talk about my Cinderella retelling- CINDERFELLA. This is a modern retelling with all roles reversed. It keeps the magic of the original but has a little darkness and passion. My favourite scene would have to be the ball when Ellie realizes it’s Ash behind the mask and they sneak into the gardens for a passionate embrace.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?

In other books maybe, not so much this one, although I do have princess tendencies!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I always know how my story will finish and often write the ending first then try to get to that point somehow.

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?

I love to read. It’s so important to keep reading. I read mostly YA but have started venturing a little older. I love authors such as Jennifer Armentrout, Kiera Cass, Cassandra Clare, John Green and James Dashner, to name a few.  Recently I read Where the Crawdads Sing and fell in love with it.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, till date?

Believe in your story and one day someone else will.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Read as much as possible. Always edit then edit again!

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?

For Cinderfella I would love for K.J Apa (Riverdale) to play Ash and Madison Iseman (Jumanji) to play Ellie.

If you were to be stranded on the famous deserted island, what three things would you carry?

A phone, water and a really big novel.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

I want to visit the Anne Frank house as I played her in college, but I’m not sure if it would be too hard and overwhelming.

About the Book:

She’s running from her title and a man she doesn’t love.
He’s just a farm boy who dreams of becoming more.
She has all the luxuries in the world but is never truly happy.
He is forced to sleep in a barn and treated like a slave.
She just wants to be invisible; he just wants to be seen
When their two worlds collide, can they really live out their perfect dream?
Throw in a hint of magic, a glass slipper and a ball.
Add two nasty stepbrothers and then just maybe, love can conquer all.
