Set in the beautiful country of Australia, “Emotional Hangover” tells
the story of three women in three different stages of their lives.
First is the story of Natalie. On the family front, she is married to
the man she fell in love with two decades back and has a teenage daughter. On
her career front she is a teenage therapist and has a bestseller book credited
to her name. She has all the perfect ingredients for a happy life. Second is
that of Natalie’s daughter, Myrah. A teenager, who is on the top of the social
ladder in her high school and has her sights set on a dreamy boy. Third is that
of Tara, in her mid-thirties, is struggling with both her personal life and her
career. Is it just a mid-life crisis that she is going through or something
entirely different?
When the veil is removed, we find that the worlds of these three women
are crashing down upon them. Natalie’s husband leaves her for another woman and
a completely different life and doesn’t know how to deal with her own teenage
daughter. Myrah is dumped by her group of friends, estranged from her crush and
has a step-sister thrown into the mix. Tara’s odd standpoint on spiritualism
and her image in her circle is questioned.
What I liked about this novel is that though this is a work of fiction,
the characters and situations in the novel are very true to life. Though set in
Australia, I guess women from all over the world will be able to relate to it
in some way or the other. The irony, which is Natalie’s life, is portrayed very
well. Society’s perception of some one’s life may not always be what it usually
seem like. For instance, Natalie may come across as someone who has everything
on life. But in truth she is left feeling lost and questioning her own life. Also,
in case of Tara, people’s perception of her only pushes her to prove herself.
And, Myrah is a typical teenager. The language adopted by the author to paint
the story of these three women is flawless.
Overall, this a well-balanced novel with a lot to offer to the chic-lit
lovers.
