#BookReview :: NYPD Red 3 (NYPD Red #3) by James Patterson

Hunter Alden, Jr., a billionaire businessman, has it all: a sexy wife, a brilliant teenage son, and an ever-growing fortune. But his perfect life shatters one horrific night when he discovers the severed head of his chauffeur, stuffed in a bag marked, in blood, with his son's initials. Now his son is missing, and the price to get him back might be too high--even for one of the world's richest men.

When NYPD Red, the elite task force for New York City's most high-profile crimes, takes the case, Detective Zach Jordon and his partner--and ex-girlfriend--Kylie MacDonald have never seen anything so unspeakable. As the investigation continues, Zach and Kylie realize that the closer they get to the truth, the more their own lives are in danger.

Hunter Alden seems to have it all. A booming business, growing fortune, a sexy wife and a brilliant son – he has it all. But his perfect life comes crumbling down when his chauffeur turns up dead and his son goes missing. Hunter Alden being who he is, NYPD’s elite task force is dispatched to handle the case. Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald are in charge, but with Hunter throwing around his weight and money and the killer a step ahead of them, they have a difficult task.

Hunter Alden had been close with his chauffeur and so he wants the perpetrator’s head on the chopping block… But why is he trying to hinder the case and why is he denying the fact that his son might have been kidnapped? What appeared to be a simple murder case soon takes a darker turn and the detectives find that they have to give their best to be able to come out on top of this one.

Though this is the third book in the series, this is the first one that I managed to get my hands on. For me Zach and Kylie’s relationship dynamic was too ‘in my face’ sort. I do not know how it has been developing over the first two books and that left me feeling like I was missing something. Also, while I do like the protagonist’s to have a parallel personal life in the books, Zach and Kylie’s relationship kind of hijacked this book. For one, their relationship took up much space and also at some places it felt stronger than the actual plot of this book. That brings me to the plot of this installment… from the very beginning, the plot gave me the impression that I was missing some important point (which is a good thing in a thriller novel) and there were quite a few twist and turns in true Patterson style. But it lacked the focus that it should have received and fell short at a couple of points where the personal lives of the protagonists took over.

With a slow start and a not so strong plotline, this may not be James Patterson’s best. Yet, it still has the capacity to keep you glued to the pages until the very end.
