Interview with the Author:

Welcome to my Blog! What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating your books?
MB: Thank you so much! Your blog is fascinating and I enjoyed being part of this Special Feature 😊.
Well, the fact that I am writing books still seems surreal to me. I find it surprising and intriguing that my characters often behave differently than I intend them to!

How has your experience been different this time around from The Sinister Silence?
MB: Very different. “The Sinister Silence” was my debut book and it gave me many dream-come-true moments. I had a great time working with a wonderful publishing house like Srishti Publishers and learned a lot about the publishing process from them. With my new book “Who Killed the Murderer?”, I feel I have evolved as a writer. I faced a few challenges on the way, but I guess that is life. I am happy that the book is doing well. Fingers crossed!

What do you hope for the readers to take away from Who Killed the murderer?
MB: This is my first psychological thriller. I hope readers empathize with my antagonist Shagun Seth. Her character is based on real-life people I have met. The inconsistencies in Shagun’s behavior show why mental wellness should not be ignored.

Tell us about the character development of Mili Ray.
MB: I always wanted to become a police officer but failed to crack the civil services examinations. So, as a writer, I like building characters who specialize in law enforcement. Thus, ex-super-cop-turned private detective Mili Ray was born. I gave her two assistants – a criminal lawyer Gatha Trivedi and an ex-Army officer Anubhav Datye. Their characters will evolve with each novel. I am also writing a prequel about Mili Ray’s life in the police force.

What is the cardinal rule of writing a mystery/thriller?
MB: The only rule is that no rule works. What may seem like a strong plot to me might not appeal to another crime writer. The conviction to build your original idea is all that matters.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
MB: Yes!!

What did you do with your first check from your books?
MB: I bought air tickets to Goa 😊

Have you ever been on a literary pilgrimage? Do you plan to?
MB: What a brilliant suggestion! I have never been. Now, I must!

What are the most unethical practices in the publishing industry?
MB: That’s a relative question. What is unethical to me might appear perfectly ethical to another author or publisher.

Have you ever actually seen the printing process? Do you want to?
MB: Oh yes, I was fortunate enough to witness the printing process at the office of Patra Bharati Publishers in Kolkata. It was a fabulous experience, a real treat! I will always be thankful to Tridib Kr. Chatterjee and Esha Chatterjee for making it possible.

Book Trailer

About the Book:
When TV actress Shagun Seth mysteriously dies in a beauty parlour in Mumbai, her mother slams murder charges on Shagun’s banker husband Chetan Seth. Chetan’s family suspects that he is being framed and requests private detective Mili Ray to investigate. As Mili and her lawyer-associate Gatha start work, Chetan is released on bail. Soon after, Shagun’s mother is killed! Is Chetan responsible for these murders?
Mili probes deeper and unravels shocking secrets buried beneath Shagun’s world of glitz that leave her baffled. An insecure boyfriend, an estranged husband, an opportunist colleague, a cunning TV producer – Shagun was surrounded by haters. Even her 12-year-old son didn’t want to see her alive. Why did everyone hate Shagun?
While meandering through dysfunctional family upheavals and dark showbiz sagas, ex-super cop Mili also struggles to tame her own internal demons. Will she be able to solve her second case as private detective or succumb to pressure and hang up her boots?
Who Killed the Murderer? is a gripping psychological thriller that will hook you right from the first page.
