Interview with Douglas Misquita

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller.

After reading Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park. But my genre is inspired by Clive Cussler, who passed away recently. Rest in peace.

What inspires you to write?

I’m inspired by history, mystery, conspiracies, white-collar crime, beautiful locales… and issues.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?

In Haunted, I introduced Kirk Ingram as a man who has lost his family and gave him nightmares. But every hero has nightmares. What could I do different? I thought, what if those aren’t dreams, but Ingram transcending into the afterlife, and his brain cannot cope with it? Therein, was born the concept of a man who is simultaneously dead and alive. And then I thought, religion is rife with gods who are reincarnated or rise from the dead; how can I merge these storylines without offending anybody’s religious sentiments. Finally, a family vacation to Italy provided me with the backdrop for Spectre.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?

Several. There are also sub-plots that are edited out of my books that form the basis for future books. I’m always saving articles on my phone.

Tell us about your writing process.

I start with an ‘issue’ I’d like to make my readers aware of. Then I find ways to create a struggle around that issue. I’ll throw in wonderful locales, figure out how to drive my story through these places. Then I’ll start writing and come up against obstacles that will demand a re-assessment. That’s when I start tossing things out as ‘too forced’ or ‘implausible’ or ‘unnecessary’ and the book becomes lean and tight.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

The one where Ingram goes into the Plane of Existence after this life. It allowed me to bring closure to his loss from Haunted, and make him his OWN man. The chase scenes in Rome and Florence, of course are very accurate because I visited those very streets. So imagine me sightseeing and plotting.
On that note, I hope Italy recovers speedily from the corona virus.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?

No, they come with their own set of problems. No need to burden them with mine. 😊

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Every story features a private jet. I can’t do without them! And I think, I also love warehouses…

Do you read? Who are your favourite authors and how have they influenced your writing style?

Of course. I’ve discovered Mark Greaney, who writes no-nonsense action. Then there’s Matthew Reilly who keeps things crazy – you must finish his books in a single sitting. James Rollins, Andy McDermott, Steve Berry, Scott Mariani are my annual bankable authors. Recently, I’ve been reading non-fiction which I channel into my plots.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, till date?

Keep writing. Don’t stop. It’s what I tell myself.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write, write, write. Don’t be bogged down by sales figures. Write, write, write.

What would be the Dream Cast for you book if it was to be turned into a movie?

Hmm. I’d like for my books to launch somebody’s career. You know, like Die Hard (did you know it was based on a book?) launched Bruce Willis as an action star.

If you were to be stranded on the famous deserted island, what three things would you carry?

A solar energy bank, satelite phone and it's charger .

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?

It’s home, with family. I unwind playing guitar.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

Travel to Bhutan, shoot a Browning M2 .50 cal machine gun, take a ride in a gunship, visit Disney Land, meet Brad Paisley and James Rollins.

What do you have in store next for your readers?

Next is Trigger Point – Luc Fortesque #3, then comes, Lion #2, and a new series featuring an Indian hero. I’m excited about all these and glad I’ve finally found a unique way to weave an Indian into my stories

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?

Keep keeping on! Show a little kindness wherever you go! Be somebody’s hero.
