Harriett had taken a sip of her Earl Grey and frowned as she heard the letterbox close. She looked at the clock. It was too late for the postman. She was ready for a break, and turning her head, she worked out the knots in her shoulders. Chester’s ear pricked up as he heard the letterbox but he didn’t move. She’d had him since he was a puppy but that was nearly seven years ago, not long after she’d been released. She didn’t want to think about him leaving her.

Grumbling, she walked down the hallway to the front door, where she could see a brown envelope that had been pushed halfway through the letterbox. As she pulled it out, she could see no name or address on it, so she presumed it had been hand-delivered.

A frown still pulling at her forehead, she walked into the kitchen as she opened the envelope. She noticed the quality of the paper as she pulled out the thick sheet. She turned it over and screamed as she registered the words, dropping the paper and gripping the side of the worktop to stop herself from falling. Chester barked once. The paper oated gently to the oor and landed face up. She couldn’t take her eyes o of it.

“YOU WILL PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID.”
