#Bookreview :: The Watcher by James Howe



A mysterious girl sits on top of the steps overlooking the beach, occasionally recording her observations in a notebook, as she watches a boy and a lifeguard and makes up heroic stories about their lives.









This is indeed one of those books where even while reading it for the first time, you know that you are missing out on something. So, even though I had finished reading this book long time back, but I waited for some time to read it a second time before sitting down to write this review.

At a glance, this is a story of three young people – Chris, Evan & Margaret. Chris has a past with a loss that he is yet to come terms with and works as a lifeguard at the beach. Evan is a young teenager who feels the weight of the world as his parents’ relationship changes. Margaret brings the other character together with her watchful nature and vivid imagination. Every day she watches the people at the beach and incorporates them into her own story in the way she perceives each of them. For instance, Chris is an angel because he ‘saves’ people and Evan is the protector because of the way he is protective and possessive about his sister. But, Margaret has a secret of her own.

When I first got the book and read through the summary, I felt that this would be one of those books that would cast a creepy girl as the protagonist. But this book is so much more than what comes off from the summary.  Though Margaret plays the title role of the ‘watcher’, each and every character portrayed has a special role/place in the story. Without them the story would never be the same. The way the author has portrayed the simple-innocent mind of the youth and their take on the complications around them is simply amazing. The emotions and psyche of each character captures gave an insight that is rarely captured in such a raw style.

In addition to the plot, the author has narrated the story in a fast pace, giving the reader no time to come up for air. The smooth flow of words used only compliment the plot. This is a fast read but maybe not so ‘light’. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and will be added to the list of books that I can go back and read again.

#BookReview :: Hollywood Holiday (Red Carpet #2) by Sasha Summers

All she wants for Christmas is for Hollywood to love her again. But once she meets him, her Christmas list changes.

 Jen’s only Christmas wish: Hollywood falling back in love with her. Meeting ex-Marine Gunner was a bonus. She likes that he isn’t impressed by celebrities or the movie biz. She likes that he’s funny and sweet … and drop-dead gorgeous. And she loves that he has no idea who her alter-ego is: Jen Fleming, Hollywood bad-girl and paparazzi target number one. Why ruin an amazing affair when he’s leaving after the new year? 

 But the closer they get, the harder she falls, and the more she wants to tell Gunner everything. Especially once he shares his secret with her. 

 Her new Christmas wish: Gunner accepts and loves her for who she really is.



I have to admit it at the very beginning that I haven’t read the first book in the series. But with romance novel series I had usually seen that though the characters often overlap, each book can stand on their own. And it is with this belief that I picked up this book. I was right and though reading the first book in the series will definitely be an advantage, you can read this as a standalone too.

So, Jen is famous for all the right and the wrong reasons. As she is on her way back from a rehab, she meets an ex-marine on the plane. Gunner is a gorgeous guy, who lets you hold his hand and holds you when you are freaked about flying.  There’s an instant connection between them and they decide to see more of each other once they land up at their destination. But there’s a catch, Gunner isn’t aware of Jen’s real identity and Jen doesn’t know Gunner’s secret from his marine days. They each have a lot to learn and face before they can have their happy endings.

As characters that shape up this novel, both Jen and Gunner are very lovable and true to life. On one hand Jen lives this glamorous life of Hollywood star, but she has made her fair share of mistakes. What makes a reader like me like her is that she is truly trying to atone for it. It was also a change to see the life of a star from her point of view, while reporters & paparazzi invade your private space like you don’t deserve it at all. Gunner on the other hand is handsome, sexy, caring and funny – all wrapped up in one! A perfect fictional character [:P Yep! They just don’t make ‘em like that in real life.] They somehow do complete each other.

The plot was simple and predictable like most romance novels. The relationship in this one too moved a bit too fast for my liking. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the wooing-dating-getting to know each other period to be a bit more spaced out. The author’s style of writing is easy to get into and as result it turned out to be a pretty fast read. And, to round it up – it was a pretty enjoyable read.

#BookReview :: Familiar Ties by Naya Nikki

This is a story about two people, their lives and their connection to each other.

Max is an author, a widower and also a single father of a 4 year old. He lost his wife to childbirth and has been raising Phoebe singlehandedly ever since. Well, almost singlehandedly. Amy, a successful designer, also almost a single mother - since her wayward boyfriend is always away chasing his own dreams in the tinsel town. They are not only best friends but also a huge lifeline for each other when it comes to raising their kids Grace and Phoebe.  They have a history too. They had dated back in college but then Max had ended up marrying Amy’s best friend Anna. Amy had been heartbroken but she never really stopped loving him. The plot covers about a week when suddenly things change… What changes, you might ask! Max and Amy finally confront their feelings for each other. But there are the kids to be considered and not to forget Jack, Amy’s boyfriend. What happens and how it happens is for you to find out.

This is really a heartwarming story not only about love, but also friendship and family. Max’s relationship with his brother & sister-in-law and Amy’s relationship with her mother and Jack - are all very different from each other. Also, the different stages of love, friendship and companionship that Amy and Max go through over the time are portrayed beautifully. Also, I liked the way the author has slowly eased us into their lives by alternating between the past & the present.

And of course Grace & Phoebe are so sweet. You can’t help but falling in love with them. Especially when Phoebe makes a ‘cheese sammitch’ for Grace, I couldn’t help but go ‘awwwww’.

Overall it is a great read so go ahead and get yourself a copy!
