So This Is Love (Callaways #2)

For Max Harrison, love seduces and then destroys. His brother went to prison for love. His father left his family for love. And Max is determined not to follow in their footsteps, until he meets Emma…

Emma runs into burning buildings without an ounce of fear and embraces life as if every day is a new adventure. But while she's fearless on the job, Emma is a coward when it comes to love. Betrayed by an ex-boyfriend, Emma has no intention of putting her heart on the line again, until she meets Max…

As the fires around the city rage, the heat between them ignites in a blaze of passion that's far more dangerous. Will it destroy them or will they finally get everything they ever wanted…

My Review:

Emma Callaway has followed the family tradition firefighting for a career. She is a good fire investigator who is fearless and has good instincts. She has always tried hard to keep up with the family’s reputation. But when it comes to her personal life, she has made a few mistakes and has sworn off men for the time being. Max Harrison is a cop with a very good track record and he is back in his hometown for what he thinks is a short time. He has sworn off love completely since his father left his family and his brother landed up in jail for love. When there are fires around the town that looks like arson and a dead body turns up in the third fire, Max and Emma’s lives cross each other in ways even they do not want to think about.

We were introduced to Emma and Max in On a Night Like This (Callaways #1) and I have to say that I liked Emma immediately. She is always curious about everything and often comes across as kind of ‘in your face’ of a personality, who is always meddling in other people’s lives but no one can really hold it against her as she genuinely cares for her family and friends. She is bubbly, charming and easy to like. Max on the other hand is quite a reserved person. He has a good heart and a caring outlook. Together they form an incredible team, not only at a professional level, but also at a personal level. The mystery factor in this story is much more serious than what we saw in the first instalment. There was a bit of action towards the end that was an added bonus to the story. I played the guessing game and I have to admit that I had considered one of the characters to be the antagonist in the story only to give up on that persona and look at another. I was pretty sure I knew who it was, but man was I wrong!?! Frankly, I wasn’t expecting such a twist from a romantic thriller and I was pleasantly surprised.

Barbara Freethy has a simple yet stimulating way of narrating her stories that draws you in, makes you feel really close to the characters and just keeps you turning the pages. This was a good follow through to the impressive beginning of the series.
