#Interview with Susan Stec, #Author of Purgatory

USA Today and Amazon bestselling author of THE GRATEFUL UNDEAD series
releases Purgatory, a Place Down Under

About the Author:
I love laughing with my daughters, class B scary movies, fine cuisine and hamburgers from Wendy's. I'm addicted to electronics, dark chocolate, vintage eyeglass frames, and fuzzy warm socks.

One's real life is so often the life that one does not lead ~Oscar Wilde

There isn't just one thing I'm passionate about. I'm married to a wonderful man, have two adult daughters, three grandsons, and three dogs. I live on fifty acres, hunt and fish, and I will get up in the middle of the night to listen to the coyote sing. I sculpt stained glass, paint watercolors, make jewelry, but most of all I write. I write because I have to and because it amuses me to live vicariously through my characters.

Interview with the Author:

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
When several vampires, a werewolf, a fairy, and a troll showed up in my head and they wouldn't go home.

What inspires you to write?
The women in my family inspired me to write my first book. I wanted to make them immortal. It was only supposed to be a Christmas gift for them. One thing led to another and one morning I woke up and my name was on Amazon.

What kind of research goes into your book?
I LOVE research! I'm sure I'm on several 'watch' lists. I bet I made Homeland Security's top ten list of IP addresses to watch. I've researched from sexual proclivities to what goes on in Area 51, or how a fifteen year old, blind serial killer can murder and dispose of bodies in upper state Michigan in the winter—for that one I alerted local law enforcement with in their face interviews. I also love doing research on serial killers—three years spent on Erzsebet Bathory, the Blood Countess of the 14th-15th century who appears in several of my books should've gotten someone's attention.

What are you working on at the moment?
Currently trying to finish book 4 in my Grateful Undead series, but I have several in the hopper: book two in my Dead Girls series, book two in my Purgatory series, and I've also started a 4th novella in my Dark and Deadly series.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?
Since I've already mentioned I model the Grateful Undead series off the crazy women in my family, I will use the fifth novella in my Dark and Deadly series. It is a takeoff of Hansel and Gretel. Only the ugly witch does not live in a gingerbread house. She owns a restaurant named Belle de jour.

Please share three interesting facts about the characters in your book.
All the women in the Grateful Undead series are really family members—descriptions, dialogue, and attitude.
The inspiration for When the Bough Breaks came from an unsolved murder in our town in 1983.
The stripper in Purgatory was inspired by a woman who used to come into my salon.

If you could pick any famous author to review your book who would you pick and why?
Janet Evanovich because I think we are related.

Have you read any books that have inspired you to improve or change yourself in any way?
The Brothers Grimm and Andersen's Fairy tales.

Name three things that you believe are important to character development?
Dialogue, action, and expressions.

Do you ever experience writer’s block? If so what helps you to get over it?
Yes. Reading books or reviewing other writers.

What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most?
Research, and editing that second pass.

Do you know the ending of your books before you finish writing them?
Always. I start each book with a main plot idea and how I want the story to end, then let my characters take it from there. I have tried doing an outlines, but my characters trash them.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, till date?
Grow some hard skin and be open to your reviewers and beta readers, but hold true to your original dream.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write for you, not what you think is trending.

PURGATORY takes a doppelgänger through a number of female hosts in search of love in a world where it doesn't exist.

Can two very different creatures find love in a world where hope leads to disappointment, and wishes lead to disappointment? They will have to fight all that is Down Under to find out.

I am a myth with no name, no flesh, no sex, and no identity... Unless I wear one of  you.

I can hear his heartbeat; I feel the heat of his gaze, the strength behind his touch. Crap! My head is spinning—my head, not the human's I'm wearing. I never do this. I amuse myself and let them do the dreaming, the what-if's, and get off on that. I don't contemplate commitment, relationships, love! I just get my high on. I trade them their lives for a quick fix.
Damn it, sex with this guy is not going to be a quick fix. I want...
I realize I'm grabbing for my clothes before they fall to the floor, and he's stepping back, shaking his head. What the hell?

Sexy laugh, body to die for, and eyes to get lost in, he intrigues me, attracts me, and churns up feelings I've never felt before. But Gaire turns out to be the ultimate bad boy.

A wendigo half-breed, an abomination, Gaire runs from a race that wants him dead. He can't fight what he is—they won't let him forget what he's done.

As she slowly walks toward me I can smell desire. Not human desire, a musky, animalistic desire—essential, dark, and demanding. Her blouse comes off first and she tosses it at my feet, steps out of her cutoffs, and stands before me in a triangle of black lace.
Our eyes lock. I feel hair on my neck prickle as my spine shifts and mouth salivates; heart hammering, jaw tightening, I bend and pick up her clothes. She's a breath away, waiting, feet parted, lace riding fingers as she runs them over her hips. I grit my teeth and place the clothes in between pink breasts framed in rich tanned skin; when my knuckles connect with soft creamy flesh my body tightens, prickles another warning, and it's all I can do to keep from taking her right there.
