#RTWrites :: My Top 4 Paranormal Second Chance Romances - @RT_writes

Witches. Telekinetics. Vampires. Immortal beasts. Humans.

Whatever your orientation, whatever your physiology, all sentient creatures in the universe have the capacity to love. It’s probably got something to do with the propagation of a particular species (who wouldn’t want more immortal beasts, am I right?), but yeah, everyone can want and love.

If everyone can love then, by extension, they are also capable of immensely hurting the people they love.

Which means…they are also capable of redeeming themselves with their beloved and, more often than not, saving the world during this redemption saga.

Often with oodles of hot, angsty sex thrown in for added pleasure.

By definition, this particular genre of romance (one of my faves, tbh) is called a paranormal second chance romance – it’s about beings who aren’t exactly human, who screwed up, and are now willing to work on forgiveness and happy ever after.

Exciting, right?

In Something Old, Something New prolific horror writer Neil D’Silva tackles the myth of Beauty and the Beast, gives it an exciting and heartbreaking twist and gives new meaning to the phrase – birds of prey :P (Brownie points if you get the DC reference)

Anywho, inspired by this rather deliciously gruesome tale, I have compiled together a list of my favorite paranormal second chance romances with a cast as diverse as you can ask for! So, let’s dive in.

Face the Fire by Nora Roberts

Amazon
FTF is the stunning, standalone conclusion to the Three Sisters Island Trilogy, a tale of modern-day witch descendants and demons set in a small Massachusetts beach town.

In Face the Fire, Mia Devlin, an audaciously powerful witch and business owner has to contend the demon that’s going to destroy her little world…and the man who already destroyed it once, Sam Logan.

Mia’s battle with herself, her emotions, the curse that was cast by her ancestor forms the core of the story. But it is Sam, green-eyed witch Sam – who loved Mia long before he understood what love really was – who wants her back at any cost and is willing to *work* toward it that make Sam and Mia one of the most iconic paranormal couples ever, for me.

Especially, because Nora really shows the character growth arcs from anger to denial to submission to eventual acceptance while maintaining such a taut control on the world-ending of it all!

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh

Amazon
Heart of Obsidian is number twelve in a series of paranormal romances written by Nalini Singh, set in the rich, textured and layered world of Psy-Changelings.

It also is, hands down MY FAVORITE book ever. Seriously, if I were to be stranded in outer space for all time, I’d take HOO with me and re-read it forever – even though I can already quote huge chunks of the book, already.

And it is all because of the way Nalini has deftly woven the elements of second chances, paranormal and sheer sexiness in an unforgettable tale.

When Heart of Obsidian begins, the heroine a fragile Psy, Sahara Kyriakus, has no name, no memory, has been broken out of a virtual prison and brought to a powerful stranger’s manor in the middle of nowhere, Russia.

But, Sahara trusts this stranger to the point where she starts doubting her own sanity. Is it Stockholm Rescue Syndrome or something more?

The stranger is a feeling-less telepathic-telekinetic Psy Leader named Kaleb Krychek, who basically holds the fate of the world in his hands. Who has spent his whole life in exactly one pursuit - finding Sahara since he lost her seven years ago and to exact retribution on the world for taking her away from him.

Without revealing any spoilers, let me just say this…you’d have to have a heart made of obsidian to not root for Kaleb and Sahara to be together!

Lover Awakened by J.R.Ward

Amazon
JR Ward’s epic, Gothic, sexilicious Black Dagger Brotherhood are a very different, almost street take on the vampire myth. They are heroic but super messed up, strong but emotionally vulnerable, and with demons that make their vampirism seem the most natural part of them!

The most messed-up of them is the Black Dagger Brother named Zsadist (a delicious twist on sadist!) – a vampire warrior who loves to feel pain in order to feel alive. The tragic circumstances of his childhood have turned him into a scarred outcast who scares everyone – living, dead, vamp.
But not Bella. A royal vamp who is fascinated by Zee’s darkness and drawn to it.

In Lover Awakened, we meet a kidnapped Bella who is fighting for her life. And Zee – who hurt her terribly in the previous book – is religiously on the hunt to find her. And the story really takes off, when he finds her…and she trusts only him even though he is the monster the monsters are afraid of.
Zsadist and Bella overcoming all their demons (including a very real live one) and finding their HEA, is what this emotionally and aggressively sexual love story all about.

Shadow Fever by Karen Marie Moning

Amazon
Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series has been a gold standard for the paranormal romance world since it first debuted. And why not?

Jerricho Barrons and Mackayla’s journey involves Greek myths, Celtic druids, a unique take on vampires and zombies, a book that turns out to be the ultimate villain and Ireland (hands down my favorite place in the whole world!)

In Shadow Fever – book five of this continuing series – Mackayla has come back a changed woman after her recent sexual abuse at the hands of some Pretty Powerful Gods! She is now a warrior who takes no shit from anyone, including and especially Jerricho Barrons – the most mysterious hero of all time.

Seriously, for the first three books all he did was look unspeakably hot, speak in a throaty Irish baritone and rescue Mac with some badass moves. Everything changes after book four though…
And Jerricho Barrons is why. He goes to hell itself to get back the woman he would…destroy the world for. (It’s awesome to read this in books but in reality it would be overwhelming). He makes her human again and waits patiently for her to mind to catch up to her heart.

Their second chance begins in Book 5 with Jerricho’s death…and that is all I will say about this fantastic conclusion to a pretty epic love story!

So, there you have it, peeps. My favorite foursome when it comes to begging forgiveness and saving the world while being emotionally vulnerable (super-duper sexy) with the people they love.
I’d love to hear about your favorite paranormal second chance romances too! Share them in comments below or tweet @RT_writes or DM me and I’ll be happy debating this delicious topic with you.
